What are y’all’s thoughts on maxing Roth 401k and other retirement accounts vs investing in low cost index funds? Love the tax advantage of retirement accounts but with the goal of retiring early, I’m struggling with deciding how to allocate my money between retirement investments and regular investments.

There are a number of ways to access retirement funds early. Look up Roth Conversion Ladder. Also principle from any Roth account can be withdrawn penalty free after 5 years, which is how the conversion ladder works.

like

I max tax advantaged accounts. If you RE you don’t need all your money at once. So really you need money to bridge the gap from when you RE to when you can access 401k etc.

like

You have access to low cost index funds in a Roth,, as well. That plus the ability to withdraw principal with a ladder strategy - no reason not to max it

Tho I’d recommend a traditional over roth 401k

Can someone explain to me what my cost would be if I took a 50k cares act withdrawal from my 401k? It says there is no 10% early withdrawal penalty but the income tax will have to be paid. If I withdraw 50k how much will I actually take home after applicable fees and NYC taxes? I'm trying to figure out if it is worth dipping into my retirement. Do anyone have any experience with this? Thank you.

Full time role with 3 weeks vacation and benefits or contract opportunity with 20k more in potential salary.

Little background, I have been a loyal employee and have only worked at 1 firm for about 6 years now. Looking for more growth and obviously money.

Need some suggestions on what to consider and any pitfalls that I should be aware of.

Thanks

Additional Posts in FIRE Financial Independence Retire Early

Always been a fan of FIRE and reading about it has definitely helped my finances but I can’t help but wonder if the movement is more about lifestyle change than early retirement.

After you achieve FI,you basically have to maintain the lifestyle that got you there.

What if you want to go on a lavish vacation or buy that flatscreen TV? Are you supposed to do away with material goods entirely? I suppose you could keep working for discretionary $ and live off interest but then you’re not retired.

For about 7 years I've split my contributions approximately 50/50 between a traditional 401(k) and Roth 401(k) to get some tax diversification. My annual contribution has been the annual max, plus a small employer match (3%) into my traditional acct.

I'm switching jobs and am reconsidering my approach. Would it make more sense to max out the traditional 401(k) and use the present day tax savings to fund a Roth IRA, assuming I'm able to with income limits/backdoor conversions?

My parents are set to retire soon and their primary financial concern seems to be losing what they've built up, specifically keeping a cabin in the family, due to potential nursing home or end of life expenses.

They've considered gifting or putting the cabin in a trust which seems like it may make more sense. Potentially losing step up in basis is not a concern as no plans to sell and their peace of mind is more important to me.

Is there anything else they should consider? LT care insurance?
