Contribute to 401k up to employer's match Max HSA Max Roth IRA if under income limits Max 401k If your kids have earned income, match their income up to limit in Roth IRA under their name For 529 plans, you can open and start funding before you even have kids. You can put yourself as beneficiary and transfer to your kid's name later. I did this and my 6 year olds account is over 20k. If your employer offers stock purchase discount program, do it and treat it like a savings account yielding whatever the discount is. We buy cars new but use them for a long time to make it worth it. I'm still driving a 2012 Toyota Highlander with 120k miles on it.
- Max out all the retirement accounts first (see the recommended priority list if you can’t do all of them - Buy something decent and fun and drive it for 10 years - Start early. Decide if you’re trying to pay for everything or just part. Aim for 80% of that in 529 and the rest in IRA or taxable brokerage to avoid overfunding the 529 and risking penalties
There is not “one ring that rules above everything” 🤣🤣. Everyone has a different life and different goal. If you are just beginning, look to some of your friends (who you know are successful and has the same lifestyle you are wanting to achieve). Treat them to coffee and have a conversation. I got a tip on estate planning lawyer from one of my daughter’s ice skating friend’s father. He is very successful so I just asked him for recommendations. The lawyer he recommended was so awesome (in estate planing) that I recommended her to my coworkers as well. And my coworker also agree that she is awesome.
