What are your honest thoughts about gender inequality in the industry? Do you think gender has something to do with how far you go or is it just a matter of hard work?

My first job: all CDs were men, I was the most awarded creative, clients asked for me specifically to work on their briefs. They promoted a good but not great guy over me. Told me he needed the money and I was married, so... Second job: I got an offer from one of the top agencies and became a CD. Then I learned that I was paid about 30% less than other first time CDs, an not because I failed to negotiate well. I won them a pile of awards, listened to all the excuses for why they wouldn’t pay me more and left. My third job: I’m being treated fairly and paid the same as all the other CDs of my level. I love my job, my clients are great and my leaders are inspiring. An older male coworker keeps texting me weird messages after hours and touching the small of my back whenever we are in a meeting together. I will not complain because several women before me complained and achieved nothing. Sometimes I get so angry I cry in the toilet. Today this happened again. So yeah, gender has something to do with how far you go and how much energy you spend on your way there.

I’m not complaining, I’m not even frustrated about it. It feels like a cold fact of reality: the sky is blue, the grass is green, if you’re a woman in advertising, you’ll probably watch someone less talented get promoted over you, you’ll probably be significantly underpaid for some time; and some old creep will inevitably stalk you. I’m dealing with it, other women are dealing with it, it’s not the end of the world. And the fact that the majority aren’t even angry is actually scary.

My honest thoughts are... it doesn’t seem too prevalent. Sorry if that’s a unpopular opinion. Both agencies I’ve worked at have had female CCOs. Plenty of executives are woman, probably majority. The creative departments are probably 50/50, and in my experience it’s the best people that get the best briefs. Account seems to be disproportionately female. Also, both agencies have pretty public salary bands, so beyond a few grand, unsure how you could be far behind anyone else. Obviously this is different if you were promoted / hired from the outside, but that’s a totally different conversation and it’s silly to be expected to be paid apples to apples anyways. As far as how far you go in your career, people forget there are other skills and factors that go into it. Like personality, management ability, etc.

Depends on the culture. At my first shop I was well respected and given a lot of opportunity because I proved I could handle it. At my last full-time agency I was constantly partnered down, told I was doing great work but never given more opportunity, and eventually laid off.

I am a woman who worked with another woman for a number of years. Despite being awarded many things on our own volition (under 30 competitions, young lions, etc) we would never get any of the big briefs at our agency. They would ALWAYS go to the male teams, the ‘bros’ to do the big budget briefs. I wonder where I would be if we got them now...

I’ve found if you’re a female writer you can’t be funny. I had a cco once tell me I couldn’t have written the script that made him bust out laughing. It had to be my male partner. That was the FIRST time that happened.

I am curious how other inclusion teachers are being utilized when the school is doing remote learning. I find that I am sitting in the zoom class and have very little opportunity to contribute. What qualities do you look for in a mentor, or if you already have a successful mentor/mentee relationship what makes them a good mentor for yourself? That is, if you had the option of choosing one. Same gender, ethnic bg, professional bg?

I’m a mid-level working in a niche area in NYC. I like the work I do, put in long hours, high quality work, take time to mentor juniors, etc. I see myself at a law firm long term but now wondering if this is the right firm to make partner. Among others, one big concern I have is the non-existent emphasis on diversity and inclusion initiatives (they aren’t even pretending to care...), no committees, no statements in support of POC, etc. How do I find firms really committed to these issues?
