What are your thoughts about the H1b visa extensions on their way out. I see that although there is plenty of local talent available these are being used to get in cheaper labour from India and China.

H1B visas are not used to get cheaper labor from India and China. They are used to employ educated and highly skilled workforce from other parts of the world. H1B holders must be making at a minimum $60,000 a year (not cheap labor), and many H1b holders make much more than the minimum. So it’s not for cheap labor, but for mere access to skilled labor that has a global mindset.

like

Kpmg1 - you can not argue that the h1b system has been abused by firms such as ours to bring in cheaper labor from countries such as India who will work for lower amounts than a us person with same experience would expect. And while of course some of the tech folks that work in Bay Area from India China etc are Visionaries for which the skilled worker program was developed - vast majority of folks are doing routine work for which there is not a labor shortage in the us.

Well ey3 - usual line about how unless you are a Native American - your ancestors were immigrants at one point as well. I think the h1b system - like the points based system in Australia is net positive for us society and economy - and it’s a shame that firms abusing it make it easier for trump train to put through changes.

like

As someone who worked for the big 4 in Australia and is now working in the US, I’m constantly amazed at how relatively lacking in diversity the US firms are. I think it would do the firms and their staff a lot of good to have more diversity, rather than the current attitude which comes across as xenophobia and scared, and visas like the h1b are a good mechanism for doing this.

like

I have a lot of friends on H1B, who went to grad school here in the US, and it’s not easy to find companies who sponsor on H1B, because it’s NOT cheap for a company to sponsor H1B visas. Big 4 doesn’t sponsor H1B openly, and I know people who have gotten offers from big four but can’t accept it because they won’t sponsor the visa. So i don’t believe that companies are abusing the H1B process, we don’t have as many H1B visas as the current administration is trying to make it seem like we do. H1B visas aren’t taking jobs away from Americans, it’s called globalization...

like

You guys - H1B workers aren’t hired at a lower cost to the firm...it’s required by law that they’re paid at the market rate, otherwise the firm will be disqualified to hire the talent. I have a H1B visa and I had to come in at a higher rate than my peers because I have to be paid at market rate lol

like

“It’s call globalization” ??? please Americans first when working in America! Everyone thinks they have some kind right to be here and it’s ridiculous.

like

H1-b visas are transferable so once someone has one they can leave the firm and go to another employer if they want to. Also, H1-b workers must be paid a “prevailing wage” which is 95% of what other American workers are paid for the same job, so they are not cheap labor. It’s a myth that you can pay an H1-b visa holder substantially less than an American worker to do the same job

I cannot tell if the op wanted this to be a political thread. In hindsight he or she probably did. Noting again I benefited from this program (long time ago - before some of the abuses that currently exist were as prevalent) but come on Pwc there are ways around the prevailing wage standards. There are different categories of h1b visas and the majority which are issued go to level 1 (which means not as highly skilled). These might be programmers with 4-5 years experience but a firm like Deloitte brings them in as if they have 1 year of experience so say prevailing wage is 100k - they offer them 95k - but really prevailing wage for someone with 5 years experience is 150k (made up figures). So to kpmg point above - even with 3-4K visa application cost (assuming using external law firm) Deloitte is saving 50k. And because person from India wants to come here - they take it. I’ve seen this happen time and again and I’m sure some folks who were high up enough could weigh in on inclusion of this strategy in business plans. I think historically it’s worked out for both as maybe after the 6 year period the visa recipient has either married and got green card - or is performing well and gets green card - but I think going forward firms will subsidize less and less green cards. I got accused of being insensitive when I suggested Europe or Canada or Australia to someone in another thread whose firm wouldn’t sponsor a green card - but my advice to h1b visa holders would be that they should be careful about how deep a set of roots they want here. In saying that if they are just arriving now trump will be gone by time visa expires (fingers crossed) and maybe immigration will be more flexible at that point

EY1 I don’t understand why it’s considered cheating the system if they are required to pay H1B holders a minimum of 60,000....... the average H1B holders makes way more than 60,000.

like

But they are prob paying 70k for a role which would cost 90k to employ us person. That’s not what system was designed for. Should add - I was on h1b visa so worked out for me. But again think some firms have abused which has lead to desire for action

like

The people that I see on h1-b visas are nothing exceptional .. ea,a and CPA ‘s that there are plenty here. So I think that they are hired not because they bring any exceptional skills to the table but because they can be hired at a cheaper cost and essentially can’t leave.

EY2 - I don’t believe you - but to play along - are you saying for sure you are paid more than peers who have exact same experience as you? What SSL are you in that couldn’t hire folks here?

Thanks EY1- Nah not a political thread but more of trying to understand how prevalent the H1b program really is in big 4 / accounting and how this will affect the future job market. Like my team of 10 CPA’s has 2 H1-b visa holders. One a below avg performing EA and one high performing CPA. Both with no education from the US.. everyone on the team has a masters degree and a CPA or an EA. There are numerous local applicants , so I don’t see the shortage of locals who qualify in this field. Just curious about the sentiment / effects of this.

Lack of diversity??? SA1, I am an ex-L1 visa holder and coming from London I can tell you the US has diversity, lots of it. I believe it depends on the office you work in.

Prevailing wages rules don't help because the laws of supply and demand dictate that if the supply of workers go up then prevailing wage will go down for everyone.

On ApplicantLab, the coach goes on quite a bit about having a lot of white space on your resume (easy on the eyes), etc etc. This is totally wrong, right? Ive explicitly a Wharton admissions officer say to use margins to your advantage (pack more stuff in) and have seen an application guide at an MBB, where the resume templates include very little white space. Obviously every word should be valuable, but just wanted to check my sanity here since AppLab offers good advice elsewhere.
