Hi Amazonians. Can you share the work culture in Retail tech team or in Amazon in general. I've received an SDE1 offer. I have other offers from Microsoft and Goldman Sachs as well. I am really confused between Amazon and Microsoft. All the people I've talked to have said to take the Microsoft offer. Please share your thoughts. Thanks.

Companies need a more hands-on and interactive approach; the era of relying solely on your vendor is gone if you value your company and its assets.
We need to look closely at our supply chains and ensure they keep up with security standards; of course, this is a two-way street.
Lead by example, implement controls, deploy an active security awareness campaign and practice good cyber hygiene.

It is a nice gesture.
At one of my previous companies, day 1 is just 30 minutes with an onboarding recruiter in the morning. She joined the call, welcome us and tell us to just take a break for that same reason… get some rest to transition.
You brought up valid points about excitement on hitting the ground running. Most of us were like left wondering what we should be doing for the rest of the day. We are excited to join, we want to mingle yet we are told to log off and come back tomorrow. If it’s messaged properly, it could have gone better
But the company also slow down on onboarding with ~2 weeks of new hire onboarding. Same issue. It’s nice to have us slow down to transition but my mgr didn’t message much properly and left me wondering what I should be doing because everything was so slow.
Regardless, if it is a company wide culture, let new hires know there are no consequences, help ease their mind on taking advantage of the perk, it’s a great thing to do.
This is a hilarious gimmick
From a liability perspective, it’s a signing bonus disguised as time off
It’s a great idea. But in todays world nobody likes to be told what to do (mandatory), everyone wants a freedom of choice.
And if given a choice it would be a great idea to have a survey on how many will take it. I think many will just take the bonus.
Decompression should be supported during tough times, and not at the end of it.
I like this because it encourages taking breaks between jobs. Right now people are incentivized to horde vacation time as soon as you suspect you might be leaving (to get it paid between jobs) or to start new jobs right away in order to keep consistent cash flow. Hording the hours makes it worse cause you're more likely to need a larger gap between roles since you haven't been taking vacation up til now and might be burned out.
Either signing bonuses paid upfront or paid time off are valid options. Giving a choice is best as everyone recharges differently and folks shouldn't be disadvantaged for that.
Personally, would never do that. Would use the PTO during the half year before leaving, and take another unpaid break between jobs.
To me a month or so of travel, time with family or potential kids, or just relaxing is worth a lot more than a months income, when you know you have a new job waiting anyway.
Consulting pays well enough, no one on this app is so cash strapped that you can't forego a month of income.
If you care more about your bank account cash flow than living life outside work, have fun spending it when you finally retire, if you make it there.
I think it’s a great idea, but they should have some sort of option to make that time flexible. I.e, use a week for a break in between and have the remaining time rolled into your PTO
You asked if there was evidence. I said there's mountains and indicated I was being hyperbolic. I then mentioned that the evidence is high up in Google search results for "unlimited PTO"
Chief
I'd rather be given more PTO and get to choose when I want to use it
I like it, I took two weeks in between my previous role to reorganize and prepare for the new role and this would have been great.
Gotcha. Makes sense

I like it. Also doesn‘t sound like it‘s mandatory.
Btw unlimited PTO is not an employee benefit. It‘s used to have less that companies need to accrue / fund and ultimately leads to people take less time off and/or loose money. You should reconsider that and look ater your employees to not create unnecessary pressure or ‚fear‘ of taking time off
If I secured a new job, I'd hand in my resignation for at least a month earlier, and travel a bit, relax for a while.
I see absolutely no reason to start after the weekend. Money isn't everything, and no one cares about a month or so break, even two. (And if anyone does, pity their life)
If it's possible to combine like at this firm, great!
Sure there are people living paycheck to paycheck, who don't have this luxury, but that's no one on this app.
