Well a high percentage of all venture dollars go thru Gunderson, so there's no lack of work in the funds group. They seem busy and happy.
In several years of LP representation in NYC (i.e., I see a lot of funds), I can’t say I’ve ever worked across from Latham... take from that what you will. Gunderson is one of the top dogs in VC and are usually pleasant to work with, despite how much I hate their form documents.
I’m at Latham. The funds group does a mix of VC and PE, which you won’t get at Gunderson. They have clients of all sizes and are a well coordinated group across offices. The culture is a pleasant one and the work-life balance is as good as any funds practice. Can’t speak to Gunderson on any of those other items.
In a regular year? Depends on class year etc. but in the 2000-2300 range, I would imagine. I think it’s 1800 to be in good standing for bonuses.
Latham's brand is much stronger, but I don't think you would get passed over for any opportunities if you choose Gunderson. They're both good firms.
The culture at the two firms is quite a bit different though. Gunderson is much smaller and places more of an emphasis on a collegial atmosphere. The structure seems to be fairly flat. Latham is a behemoth and really pursues being at the top of the game. I think that translates into a stiffer and more work-centric culture.
Former funds associate at latham. Culture is better than some other firms but deals are very thinly staffed. The funds group is tiny and the deals smaller than other firms. This also translates to being on multiple midsized deals at once and having droves of clients chasing you for things.
Thank you, really appreciate it!
Haven’t seen Latham either, though I do mostly sponsor side.
I can’t speak to the funds group, but Latham has an excellent culture overall. Associates have a lot of say and the firm is very collegial and transparent.
