What are your thoughts on heading back to the office?

I think it depends on your job. As a manager we have more flexibility. But our support guys collaborate all the time. They spend hours on meet or GTM calls. This will give them the chance to collaborate more effectively. I think flexibility in hours and schedules makes a ton of sense. But even my introverts would like to have team meetings and huddles again. I’m looking forward to being back in the office so I can separate my work and home life again. In IT we already compromise for “deadlines” or “emergencies” and work from home. But the last year there was no wall to keep them apart. I worked way too many hours because I would lose track of time and blow past stopping time. Having to go home should help with that. I think it all depends on how you work and what your job is made up of.

I think that if a person is really necessary to be on site, it should be considered as 'a priority of physical presence', but many of the current jobs do not require or need physical presence in companies, therefore, the option of doing HomeOffice as well must be present. It is also important to say that socially it can affect, work is like a new university, and people also get tired or demotivated if they do not have the possibility to interact with other people. Then again: it must be an option by virtue of the roles and responsibilities that each worker has within their corporate context.

I need to see people again. I really miss being able to swing by desks or mill about in the kitchen. I don't know if that life is over anyway, even back at the office, but I struggle being alone, as I live alone. However, I realllly want flexibility.

I have not thought about it like that before. It's easier for me to have a sort of "default" on a social life with an office, because I'm not much of an extrovert, but that's a really good point. I haven't thought about aloneness in the context of being able to be more proactive about socializing...at least not in a long time.

No interest in going back, other than as needed. I don't miss having to rush and deal with traffic all the time. These days of quality work and quality family time has been amazing.

I don't see the need for it. Being able to work from home adds value to the quality of life and having to work feels more rewarding.

I don’t want to go back, in fact it is giving me anxiety. At home I am more efficient and also content. I know the flex option will not work because I will feel the social pressure that “everyone is in the office, some conversations are going on that I don’t know about” and out of fear I will go. But this will be a negative association for me and I will drag going to the office even more

Maybe you should set-up a zoom call to your office PC so people can have impromptu discussions with you XD

I've been fully remote for almost 7 years now and there is absolutely nothing that could induce me to go back to a physical office.

I worked in consulting during the early part of my career and the hoteling model definitely is the right model to institute if people are not coming into the office 4 days a week. Of course for those who come in 4-5 days permanent desks make a ton of sense

Commuting to the office (or promoting that others should commute to the office when they don't 100% need to) during the climate emergency is a hard no for me. Why anything else is relevant is beyond me.

I did - it sucks. And so does public transportation. WeDriveU is a great service/company, however. My initial comment was regarding the ridiculousness of citing the “climate emergency” as the only factor playing into WFH and the sentiment around it

I want flex if possible. I'm now used to being able to run to the dr, store, etc if I need to during the day. The only time I'm needed synchronously is meetings or if something breaks but that's what cell phones are for. I personally hate fixed office hours.

If we have a flex schedule and teammates don’t coordinate days then the opportunity to swing by desks is gone. I think the in person synergy might not come back without a fair bit of effort.

For me if I am disengaged at work I am unproductive, home or otherwise. An uninteresting job, poor leadership, or absent teamwork are common culprits.

We need flexibility, the employee needs to have a choice. We are all at different stages, some need to be an office environment because they need structure and social interaction, mainly young employees just starting out. For employees who can be productive on their own, or employees with children, aging parents, sick family members, etc, WFH is ideal. Working in an office causes problems that we haven't discussed, like sexual harrassment, biased behaviors, gossip, jealousy, in general work place negative behavior, wfh almost completely eliminates the toxic environment.

I’m interviewing for a role that is open to both remote and in-person (when it’s safe) work. Should I give salary expectations based on cost of living in the city where the office is located or based on where I’d live working remotely? Cost of living in the office location is a lot higher than where I’d live but since they are also considering in-person candidates, I know the budget is there.

Just moved into tech field as a junior college student. MIS major interested in tech and cybersecurity jobs. Looking for jobs that will provide the opportunity to work from home and have good work life balance. Around 40 hr/wk and have good opportunities to move up and make good money. But I feel like it’s hard to find all 3 in a job. But willing to work to gain the skills to be able to. Love the career opportunities in both of these fields. (US-based question) If you work in your firm’s NYC office but live in NJ, do you pay NYC city taxes? Any obligation to pay any NY taxes? Or federal + NJ state? How does remote work factor in? And side question: If you’re based in NY but live in Florida for a few weeks, does that save you some state taxes for those weeks? Or is there a cut-off number of days?

My firm recently announced that they were beginning a reservation system for hoteling starting February of 2022 for offices . We were told to clear out our offices by December 31,2022 . The lease is not up for renewal until June 2024 at which point they will look to reduce their office space due to a hybrid work model . My issue is what incentive do I have to make a reservation to go to an office when I can simply continue work from home hassle free. Any Thoughts and comments?

Been working remote since the beginning of the pandemic. Back in the office in January and trying to finalize childcare. Recruiters connecting with me for new job opportunities. Scared to even consider a shift out of my current company where I may have some flexibility bc I've been there for so long, but they're dragging their feet with giving me a well deserved raise. Looking at making a move from a top 20 city to PNW farm style living. Work from home permanently and live peacefully. Hi mamas, how do you handle a sick child when you cannot take the days off? My son is 18 months, just started daycare and he’s been sick a lot. I just changed job, so I don’t have enough PTO to take, but I’m able to WFH. Husband cannot work from home or take time off since he has a big deadline at work right now. PSA: if you’re going out on vacation, do it properly. Help me help you. I don’t want to bother you while you are out. But you told me you were doing all this stuff and since you are a midlevel and generally good at your job, I believed it was getting done. You should have either finished all of it (talking about stuff you said you were handling a month ago) and/or sent me a clear email saying “I didn’t have time to handle XYZ if you could take over”. I can’t micromanage everything. 🙏🏽

During an onsite coding interview at a FAANG I was asked to resolve the same exact problem I was asked during my phone screening. I wasn’t sure what to so, but went ahead and resolved it slightly differently than I had done before. I was asked follow-up questions and responded to them satisfactorily. But after the interview was over I started wondering if that was a test on itself? Maybe they expected me to be upfront about it? Am I overthinking this or do some companies do that?
