We have the same issue here. Paras do not need a desk space …. just a place to lock up their personal belongings. My principal insists they all have a desk which we keep in a community space outside my office. I lost my classroom do to overcrowding a year ago and have to teach in the community space as well. It just eats up real estate and serves little purpose but to add to the clutter. We are there for students…. That should be the focus. Why are they ever not working with kids ?!?! 🤷🏻♀️

I set aside a cabinet space for them to put their things. Other than that they have a cushy chair that rolls that they can use, if they like. 🤓
I was thinking of a cabinet, but the chairs are a great idea! Thank you!
Do all of your Paras get their own laptops? Or are you stuck to desktops? Not that it matters, but laptops would allow for them to share a desk. Most paras are never in the same place at the same time during the day, so said desk would be empty except for prep periods. This would cut down the need for so many desks in your communal space.
When I worked as a regular Ed teacher the paras stayed in our rooms and they had the one desk they shared. It was either next to mine or in a place that was part of the entire room but allowed for them to keep their belongs there. I now am special education teacher at our middle school and my desk is in the classroom of one of the teachers on team and their belongs are locked in a locker as they switch classes.
I have an adult area. Which is for any adult. They can store their stuff back there safely, but I also keep medicine, confidential, snacks/ lunch supplies, etc that I don’t want the kids getting into.
I am a para in a Earlier Learners room. There are 5 staff members (4 paras and 1 teacher). The paras use a closet for our stuff. We have our own laptops and a big desk area for us to sit at.
It’s a great idea to give them a locker to put their personal things in and 1 desk to share between them. I believe they feel important and valued when they have a desk. Sometimes just a small desk to use or small table and this could be a place they work one on one with students as well. I have found if they feel important they work harder for you and the students.
I have a workroom/office. So it’s easy for me to put my teacher desk in that space. Do you have a closet space that you could clean out for your para’s to put their things? You really should have a place for them.
