Making Work More Human - A Q&A with ex-KPMG Partners 11/6

What are your thoughts on the high utilization rate goals for SC/C/As? Seems like a terrible system to make junior practitioners accountable for what they have no control over

I agree. Utilisation goals are so easy to manipulate and put pressure on people that I really don’t see the point of them. Setting higher and higher goals doesn’t really change the output or the fees earned. We should be measuring output not input and clients should be paying for output not input!

VP1 that is just not true. I sit in consensus meetings all the time and they get ‘down rated’ for lower utilization

Just say what I’ve seen. By ‘down rated’ do you mean going from a top rating to an average one due to lower than target utilization? Yeah, that happens all the time. Or do you mean someone missed their utilization target by a few points and got a below average rating? I agree is some one had a target of 85% and only did 50% there needs to be a good reason. Did they do an internal initiative or work on a large BD effort? If that’s not there, that person is probably at risk for a bad rating.

More junior staffers do have some control over their staffing. Do they take roles offered to them? Can they stay on projects or do they get rolled off? Do they have a reputation that helps in their landing roles or hurts them? Also, I’ve never seen an analyst or consultant get dinged for utilization unless it was significantly off the mark (like 15+ percentage points) and there was a performance reason why.

A3 up for senior. Strong PDs on about 60% of snapshots, utilization just over 100% and over 400 overtime hrs. Chances I'm a tier 1? Was a tier 3 my first 2 yrs but had a very strong year. 😁

I’m in a bit of a unique situation career wise, being an attorney but not currently practicing and working as a legal analyst for a company. It’s a “JD preferred” position but I don’t find my skills being utilized and I’m looking to pivot but kind of lost as to what my options are since my position is niche. Anyone pivot from something niche to something more broad?

Will likely be given a formal recommendation to look elsewhere in September but it seems clear their mind is made up. Any advice? Is there any value in considering an employment lawyer re severance etc? Not sure whether to apply now for jobs ideally starting early next year or to wait and take some time off completely.
