What are your tips for affording London living? US citizen here looking to transfer to my company’s London office in the next couple of years and have heard how expensive it is to live in London. Is it really that expensive if you live with flatmates?

A lot of Londoners who try to save money:

1. Don't have a car, I personally love using my bike to get around or public transport

2. Depending on your living needs living with flatmates is the best method of living here. SW and East London is very popular for young people living in the city a budget of £650- £900 will get you a nice room in a house, 1 beds will be higher (someone else may be able to suggest budget here.)

3. Weatherspoons pub is your bestfriend

If I would make £45k and have flatmates, would that be feasible to live somewhat comfortably?

You can easily find flat shares where rent + bills + council tax is £800-1000 per month. If you want nicer then still £1200 all in.

I don’t know how it works with US Tax, but if you’re paying Uk tax you’d be taking home around £2600 per month. You should be able to save c.£500 a month tbh. If you live within means.

Personal observation - British people cook a lot, especially compared to people in urban areas in the US

Yes. It is that expensive considering your salary hit

Depends how much money you make

Once you're on ~£60k you don't need to think about it much unless you have some savings goals.

It all depends on what standards of living you want.

At £60k you can have a decent flat, live by yourself if you want to, buy nice things, go out, and go on holiday regularly without worrying about money. Likely with a couple of hundred leftover.

If you want to save £1k a month (or more), it is possible, though your lifestyle will take a material hit.

I currently work in Private (GA) Aviation & have for some time (about 12 years) I’m currently making the switch to the Department of Aviation and am unsure if I should ditch my current job (in private) and go full force with the DOA & embrace this new opportunity educationally and gather as much experience as I can or keep both jobs even though I’d be working 80hr weeks.. I love the private world but am really ready to move up. I don’t know what I should do. Any suggestions?
