I am Malala. Makes you realize how much we in America, especially females, take education for granted; teachers and students included
Dibs in Search of Self changed me as an educator and a person because it helped me realize that every student has a story outside of school that affects how he/she acts. Every action has a reason.
Books are what made me want to become a teacher! The first line of The Great Gatsby and the story itself has always really resonated with me: “Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,” he told me, “just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.”
Richard Wright’s Native Son. It tells the story of a young black man who works as a chauffeur and how he kills a white woman who is the daughter of the family he works for. As a result, he’s now on the run from the police. The story takes place in the 60s, so it plays on the stereotypes that are prevalent during this time period and what the young man does to avoid the cops at all cost.
Yardsticks by chip wood. It breaks down every childs general developmental levels from age 4-14...gives you a whole new perspective on why kids are the way they are each year. Knowing typical developmental levels for children in each grade has helped me teach in a more developmentally appropriate way.. reaching children where their at instead of just shoving rigorous curriculum down their throats.

I read Catcher in the Rye when I was the age of the students I now teach, and it dramatically changed my life.
