I don't think you can go wrong with the black label, but you could also find a nice whiskey that's made closest to your area for it to be a bit more personable. For instance, I gifted a bottle of Frey Ranch to one of my colleagues and he loved it. And I think he appreciated that it was made in Northern Nevada at a 100-yr-old ranch.

Another vote for that, Scottish whiskey always goes down well. Lagavulin is another option
Johnny Walker is fine but if you really want to give something fancy, go for Macallan whisky. 5/5 would recommend.
Johnnie Walker is not that bad actually, especially a Black Label. However, the best reaction I ever garnered was from a bottle of Glenfarclas.
Springbank. Tastes somewhat like coffee but is actually scotch.
