What career advice would you give your 30-year-old self? 😇

Start learning who you are and get the negative shit out the door. If something is still hurting you inside see a professional, or try to see the root of why you have it. A lot of childhood trauma, which prevents us to be our best selves, things like “my mother/father/ first gf/bf/brother/sister never/always _____, so I will never be able to _____” is preventing your happiness and self-realization. You are now old enough to answer only to yourself and if someone is holding you down - now is the time to break the cycle and go be gay, go be a film director, go learn all about dust, do whatever YOU really want and what really makes YOU happy, and don’t give a rat’s ass what others think, by 30 you probably won’t anyways. Also, the world might end any day now so live it like your last.

I was really looking into the future with the world might end bit, huh? Lol
It was 2018…

Be nice.

Don’t talk shit about people.

Be a work horse, not a show horse.

Career, health, love, family - cultivate all.

Build your confidence by trying out new things outside of work that you can be proud of.

Call your mom, often.

Trust your instincts, careful with senior execs - they always have an agenda.

Think of your career as a portfolio - not only for creatives but work you can be proud of.

Ethics and doing right is best, no matter what the situation.

If you find yourself getting angry or the stress is affecting your health - resign, rest, and restart.

Save 10%, donate 10%.

Find your purpose by experimenting and trying all the fun things - within reason.

It’s all about relationships- always take the coffee.

Meditate. Repeat.

Sleep.

I would add: Volunteer. Give not just in money form. Giving your time and effort to a cause you love is extremely gratifying.

Keep doing what feels right and fun, stop doing what doesn’t. Avoid debt. Enjoy the grind and the camaraderie because a time will likely come when you can’t and you will want to be in a position where you can chill a little.
I really lived my 20s both professionally and personally and now that I have two kids and a good job I am so thankful for that.

This is a political sport, so build a strong network with relationships based on collaboration, respect and substance. it’s a great antidote to volatility.
Your future depends on both moving and growing. If you only move too much nobody takes you seriously and you don’t really learn. If you only grow without moving, you risk becoming obsolete. Move and grow like you stick and move in boxing.
invest in developing wealth. See Chris Rock stand up on the difference between being rich and being wealthy.

Take a job that is risky while you're young, and don't feel sorry when you leave a job - choose yourself. Travel as much as you can. Save twice as much as you think you should. Do excellent work and be an outstanding colleague, but don't for a minute think you are unreplaceable so lose your arrogance. Find happiness and friends outside of work - it should be just one part of a full life. And most of all, take care of your body. You are still at your peak and age sneaks up quickly.

I would tell my 30-year-old self:
Bad bosses don’t last forever.
You will learn more than you ever thought.
Life is not linear, so be willing to take detours.
Invest in an index fund, and don’t panic
You will find love 💕
You will go to graduate school 🎓
It’s OK not to be as rich as your parents
Make your own decisions.
Critics are everywhere; don’t let criticism internalize.
Know how talented you are.
Know how smart you are.
Go where you are celebrated.

If you failed to make it to the 30 under 30 list, you’ve another decade in front of you for the 40 under 40 list.

In response to where to ...
Almost all industries have stress but having worked on the vendor side, ad side, real estate and see friends in other areas I notice advertising has the highest stress levels and most time commitment. If you are an AD you can do so much with your talents. Find your original passion in art and follow that...is it photography be photo journalist, be a computer graphics teacher, art therapy. There is so much especially if you are looking to start a family, this industry isn't made for work /life balance.
