What classroom management tips do you have for a nontraditional 3rd year teacher? I teach middle schoolers science. Looking for new techniques that will help me make year 4 a lot better than the previous years.

First thing: Consistency. Post your rules and then go over them every day for the first two weeks. Second, teach them procedures just before they need them, but have many procedures in your room on which they can rely. Third, and this may be the most important--cultivate relationships with your kids.

The thing that helped me the most with consistency was scaling down which behaviors I was going to manage. If you try to do too much, it's impossible to keep up.

Look up Total Participation Techniques by Himmele & Himmele! It's on my VERY small list of professional development that has been invaluable to me! http://www.ascd.org/Publications/Books/Overview/Total-Participation-Techniques-Making-Every-Student-an-Active-Learner-2nd-Edition.aspx

I have found that the teacher’s personality, teaching style, and type of content delivery do make a difference. But the demographics you teach as well as school culture also matter as well. I agree with researching management strategies by reading books, but I would do this first: find a teacher in your building who will give your real, concrete techniques they are using with the same students. Then be aware of how much you may or may not be able to apply the same strategies due to some of the things I listed in the first sentence about individual teachers. Advice and direction from people near you will go very far on this and probably help you the most, but it’s also the hardest to hear. Good luck as you work to be better for your students. On the bright side, management will help your stress level and frustration decrease and make your experience more enjoyable, fulfilling, and easier.

I don’t use the term rules, I call them classroom expectations and they are 10 percent of their grade. Failure to meet these expectations does have consequences. My expectations: 1) Come to class prepared and on time (required materials or tools may be listed); be respectful (you may define this however you choose); and, stay on task (involved). They get three marks at the start of each class period. Inability to meet these expectations result in 1st time) verbal reminder and loss of one mark; 2nd time) verbal reminder and a hand-written, 300 word essay on the merits of meeting that expectation for the future, to include career; 3) remove the student from the setting - discipline referral to the principals office with an essay and 30 minute detention or One-on-one time before or after school with you to discuss the issues that need addressed. I call meeting these expectations ‘Participation’ and it is weighted as 10% of their grade. Of course, their coursework and assessment are weighted as well.

HIGHLY recommend Responsive Classroom. There are middle school classroom management books and trainings. It changed everything for me and kids respond to it so well. Especially when I read “power of our words” and just changed HOW I talked to students. Def worth checking out
