I’m gonna defend OP here for a second. I actually know where you’re coming from. However, this is an incredibly toxic mindset to have and I’m currently in therapy to understand and get rid of it. To those curious, I only think this way because I was bullied and the butt of the jokes when I was growing up, and surpassing my “friends” professionally made me feel better, albeit temporarily, it fades eventually and hence why I’m in therapy to change my mindset and focus on doing the things I love. My guess is OP is in a similar position. Just want to add some perspective

Hot take: people who work at FAANG and MBB will tell you it’s about comp and interesting work and WLB (for FAANG) but there’s a nonzero factor of prestige that makes people want to work there (AKA making your friends jealous).
A big portion those who say otherwise are just trying to be holier than thou.
