is it a conflict of interest to do freelance work for two clients in the same industry at the same time? or is it a don’t ask, don’t tell kind of thing?

Do folks charge a kill fee for bookings on freelance gigs? For example, a client books you for two months on a project, signs contract, but either the project dies before it starts or after 6 weeks, the project goes another direction and they don't keep you on for the remaining time. Figure if you are being available for the project, you are owed something. Sort of like retainer, but not a retainer.

Did my first freelance gig for an agency last week. Just a one-week stint of high level concepting. Made the mistake of not writing up a contract beforehand, just had a verbal agreement of my daily rate.

Finished the project and they loved what I brought them. Now haven’t heard back after sending the invoice. I know it was recent, still a little worried I’m going to get ghosted. Anyone else ever deal with this?

Do recruiters have freelance process backwards & THAT'S what leads to ghosting & frustration? i.e. 9 x of 10 they contact me—'We have X need, are you free?'—to which I usually say 'YES, love to help, what's timing, etc?' And then poof, ghosted, maybe followed by "Oops, we filled it internally/the ECD chose another team/schedule changed"..so they clearly first did cattle call to find who MIGHT be free vs. ironing out ALL details—budget/timing/approval of FL'er book & team—& THEN reaching out. :(
