What counts as operational experience in a startup context? I am a data scientist interested in VC in the long run. After a year or two as Lead DS, I plan to do a stint in a startup. Would it be better to pursue roles with more of a lean towards bizops vs hands-on engineering, if the end goal is a tech-focused fund like a16z?

I don’t think VCs are looking for people with coding experience. They’re basically investment firms who want to make money by investing. Of the two choices, I’d say bizops. Operational experience in a start up would be being involved in running the business and making a dent on profits - either by reducing costs or increasing revenue. For e.g. sales, finance, purchases, customer experience, etc. but not accounting, IT, administration, etc.

No, it would be :). Operational experience in VC is playing any role in inc valuation , not profit

A bit off the path, but you could work as a quant for the VC arms of a major buyside institution. Biggest names I know of are Point72 Cohen Ventures and TwoSigma Ventures.

Once your in, you can probably move around to any VC role you want, and then lateral to a16z.

I’m a LCSW, have been working in mental health for 10 years, and have a job that enables HRSA to pay off my student loans. I really want to go back to medical school to be a psychiatrist. I’d like to pay my student loans off before taking on more debt but worry I will be way too old to go back since I already feel way too old at 38 to do it. Has anyone over the age of 35 gone back to med school? What were your challenges? Was it worth it?
