Opinions needed - I applied for several jobs with Deloitte about a year ago. (I knew I was punching up and didn’t quite meet the requirements). A year later, I have a way better profile and am getting interviews. Is it best to go ahead and delete the jobs from my profile that I didn’t get, or leave them to show my interest in the company for a long period of time? Or does it not matter at all?

Oh hell no ...

Soft skills, particularly communication.
Are there any specific kinds of skills that you feel like maybe you’re currently lacking in that might prevent career advancement? Or more like having extra tools in the tool box that show you can bring additional value, on top of what you’re already good at? Just curious 🧐
Whenever you’re cleared, just show up to a spot and try one of those out. You’ll get more out of it than you know.
Maybe design composition or something with the visual arts? Could help you become more well-rounded as a creative.
I haven’t taken any yet. It’s been on my list of things to do for a while now. I think design is interesting so it would be fun to learn about anyway.
1. For super broad career advancement, based on some clarifying comments you made below, I would recommend a couple books first that have nothing to do with writing and everything to do with attitude:
A. Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss - beef up your interpersonal communication and negotiation skills with tips from former top FBI hostage negotiator.
B. Four Thousand Weeks; Time Management for Mortals by Oliver Burkeman - learn to love your inability to do everything perfectly always.
C. The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown. Learn to love yourself.
^^These books helped me learn to think about myself in new ways and I think that's critical for a creative to balance out our natural self-loathing with Perspective. Helped buff out a lot of that New Writer sheen.
2. With that out of the way, other ideas:
- play tabletop board games with friends or get into D&D.
- play video games with friends! Reaction time, strategy, lore, vocabulary, loot, etc etc etc...if it's play, it's doing something cool in your head.
- give a VR game a try if you haven't yet. SUPERHOT has a fascinating game mechanic that will tie your brain in a knot but once you get the hang of it, it's a riot.
- Just Make Shit (TM) - had a weird idea in your head for a stop-motion animation short? Try to make it. Who cares if it sucks, you can always delete it. Spend 10 minutes on it, then move on.
- look at or make art - easy for me to say here in DC! If you can't get to a gallery (the physical space can make a difference), there's lots to explore online. Fall into the rabbit hole of art made by AI: https://www.artaigallery.com/
- Get lost - try a long walking meditation or just start walking and forget to stop. Also works in Costco. Do not try this in Target, you are strong, but no one is that strong. It will become a Target Run.
I’m interested, as well.
