What did you do to break into consulting? I was asked this question recently by someone who didn’t do it right after undergrad and I could only come up with “networking” kind of answer. But it’s clearly more than that, especially these COVID19 days.

I was in a specialized technical domain which helped me break into consulting. It is difficult to transition from industry to consulting, and thus I would suggest gaining a sought after technology or skill to whomever is looking to make the switch. At times it is easier to break into small companies as a transitional stepping stone. For example Salesforce etc.

Applied online lol. But networking would be my suggestion as well as an extremely in demand certification. Cloud is one of those areas right now, having cloud knowledge and certifications are really good.

I hustled like hell. Liberal arts major but had multiple business internships and worked for overrides into business classes. I researched the consulting firms to see where they’d be on campus and showed up. Eventually I got interviews, and in my final interview I stood my ground and maintained my poise with a partner who was, I’ll be honest, a total d*ck, and at the end of the interview asked “so why the hell should I hire a liberal arts major?”

I agree with the apathy and entitlement that seems to prevail with many young applicants these days. However whenever I come across someone who has some of the very traits you mentioned above (hustler, hungry, articulate, confidence, grit), it makes me very happy. Recently hired a young grad who is a diamond in the rough, yet didn’t know he had the attributes that made him stand out of hundreds of applicants. There is a lot of posturing these days, and way too many fakers. I’d gladly hire a humble yet hungry applicant and give them an opportunity to shine - just like the Partner did for you many years back, and others like him who gave many of us our first “break”. Thanks for sharing your story!

Also consulting isn’t that glorious. Make sure the reasons are right. Working 10-12 hours day is not fun unless you enjoy the work to some degree and have a plan on how to utilize / leverage that experience.

Get a certification to make you stand out of hundreds of applicants and make sure there is someone who can connect you with the manager or a partner to avoid HR screening since they’re useless

I have certifications in Microsoft Dynamics 365. There are cyber security certifications available as well. Just do some research on which practice you would like to join and find out the certifications they require

Referral + certification in your field are the easiest steps you can take

You need to determine what type of consulting first.

Go from "associate business analyst" to managing a team of ten BI analysts in three years. Golden ticket resume.

Solid! Can only imagine what lies ahead!

For anyone who’s started at a company fully remote (Covid or otherwise)… when ramping into your new role, what did you do to feel more connected to your team/sales dept? I’m finding that I have questions that I don’t know how or whom to ask, I don’t know who anyone is and my manager can be MIA. This is my first fully remote role and it’s thrown me for a bit of a loop
