Definitely roll to an IRA with a broker. All 401ks have relatively limited investment options (usually a set of fund families picked by your employer). By rolling the old 401k to an IRA with an outside brokerage (Vangurad, Fidelity, etc) you have way more flexibility in investment choices, and there’s not a penalty for the rollover as long as you roll directly into a traditional IRA.
Thank you so much for sharing, this is super helpful
Also does it make sense to convert to a Roth?
IRA is the best option as you can invest the way you like.. move to Fidelity or Vanguard...
Just putting that money in ETFs or Index fund will make lot of returns.
If you have a large Trad 401k balance I caution you *not* to roll into Trad IRA since it will impact your ability to do Backdoor Roth IRA. I made this mistake and now I can’t do regular Backdoor Roth due to prorata rule. (Fortunately my employer offers after tax contributions and Mega Backdoor so missing the $6K Backdoor Roth IRA isn’t a big deal)
New employer. Don’t switch to Roth as you will pay taxes on it
IRA or Roth IRA. Better options.
^Agreed be careful on rolling over if you’re phased out of roth contributions and want to do backdoor ira conversions.
I’m currently in the process of rolling over from two previous employers to my new employer with Vanguard. Want it all in one place so I can get a handle on it.
