What do financial advisors actually do?

We analyze every financial decision our clients make. Manage their portfolio in a tax-advantaged way. Help create an income plan so they can maximize the amount of money they can live off in retirement. I spoke to a lot of non clients who went to cash in March as opposed to our clients who rebalanced and risked up at bottom. Could go on and on.

To PWC1 point, there are a lot of really bad ones in our industry who just try to sell high commission products. I have seen a lot of “advisors” cost their clients money in order to benefit themselves.

Agree, just buy the market and go to sleep

Depends on what you hire them for. They can analyze your entire financial picture and give you recommendations on how to manage/invest your money to reach your financial/retirement goals.
They can actively manage your investments.
They will try to sell you life insurance.

The payouts on life insurance are so bad and it's such a pain to do that I only really write a policy if a client brings it up , would much rather do managed money.

Charge to tell you to buy the dip

Generally we help families : organize, build, protect and transfer wealth. Many people I work with fall into 2 categories : either are extremely busy and don't have time to effectively manage their finances OR have some complex family, business, or tax issue that we help to navigate.

Situation:
You’ve been accepted to an Ivy League 2 year premed program (Harvard, Columbia, UPenn) costing 20k per semester. Currently, you have no student debt, only went to state school for undergrad, and strongly dislike the work you’ve been pigeon-holed into at 2YOE (risk). You have also decided to prob not become a doctor although being interested in the sciences.
Would you still attend the program? Would it help with MBA/other program? Chances of successfully recruiting out if not for u?

I am almost 23 and don’t know much about the investment and savings vehicles/strategies that I should be using. IRAs, Roth IRA’s, long-term investments, how much I should be contributing/saving for financial success, etc. Any suggestions? Likely looking to go to grad school in the next 2-3 years.

Let’s call out the scam now: return to the office policies are asking for more of your time for the exact same pay. Record billables over the year and a half have shown that associates are indefinitely more efficient working at home. If you want me to come to the office, lower your billable expectation or pay me more. Simple economics. We have leverage, let’s exert it here.
