What do MBA grads do at tech firms? The data on any B-School's website says that consulting pays more than tech to MBA grads, however, going by the threads on this app, it seems as if tech pays more. Does the website data not include RSUs? Or does consulting actually pay more? Thanks a lot for your time and effort!

They do almost everything non-SWE - supply chain, marketing, finance and some product management And yes - consulting comp is higher and grows faster if you consider the full consultant to equity partner trajectory at MBB. This is not necessarily the case if you go to B4 and spend 5-10 years at manager / senior manager or go to MBB and leave before making equity partner.

BCG I agree with 95%. I could quibble on whether up or out models should be about non partnership outcomes as well but probably doesnt make a material difference. One distinction: amazon has a non tech pm path. However that is the faang im aeare that has non tech roles in abundance

I went back into the tech side after my MBA and its been great. Since i'm the "businessy tech person" I'm usually the lead person on my projects that talks to all the SVPs, etc. Its an amazing niche area to be in. Finally - my total comp has been going up 20-24% over the last few years and my work weeks are 40-45 hours. I'd really challenge the idea that Consulting pays more.

My salary matched that of an MBB associate. I also received equal bonus. When you add in my RSUs, I’m making more than my consulting friends. My first year compensation is $280K I’m in a non technical role I think my comp may grow slower though. The biggest advantage of tech are the RSUs. And RSUs aren’t reported in MBA reports. Idk why

Talk about “strategy,” whatever that means.

FAANG probably pays a bit more. As far as I know, EYP pays $170k out of MBA (the target ones) but that's about the same as what Amazon pays the MBA grads at L6 band, if not a bit less once you factor in RSUs. Not sure how EYP stacks up, but I think it pays comparable if not more than MBB and T2 firms.

helpful

Median comp in MBA reports does not include total compensation for tech. I know bec I had to enter my comp as 165K yet my total first year comp is 280K. If someone’s base comp In tech is 140K, their total comp is probably closer to 210K. Stock grants count as money because you can sell them and it’s like a bonus each time you cash out.

That’s the only downside for tech IMO - it’s the slower progression and comp growth outside of equity appreciation. It’s hard to continue to rely on rapid appreciation after the last 18 months, but who knows. The market doesn’t care about fundamentals - so could easily believe strong stock price trajectory

IMO most going to tech in these threads are technical. Doesn’t seem like there is nearly as much need for non technical mbas in tech as in prof services

This makes sense. Sounds like it is at par if not more than an MBA Associate at MBB Thanks!

Tech typically pays more once you exit consulting, when it comes to non-product roles straight out of MBA the pay isn’t as much for most people. TC of around 170-200 is typical for b-school, exiting as a consultant after 1-2 years it’s closer to 230-270 range. Sometimes that’s a jump in level other times it’s just they pay external hires a bit more.

Thanks a lot for the detailed reply. This makes a lot of sense!

Tech pays more in TC but it's heavy on RSUs. That impacts your month to month cash flow. Can't be ignored.

Got it. Thanks!
