The pro is increased exposure to leadership and other key stakeholders. That’s worth the admin tasks to some

Mostly happy that I’m not doing it.

So much to learn in a PMO function. It is the medium btw projects and leadership. Some parts of it, like the basics of pmo, can feel soul sucking, but once you're over that period it's so much more fun, innovative, and massively impactful. I believe it's a perfect route to make COO.

OP. I agree with your assessment if you are just starting your career. The first few years are 100% boring. Trust me I have been fortunate enough to have my career focused on Program Management and PMOs for over 20 years. But after you learn the basics it can be really fun. The part that you become trusted advisors to leadership is when you take all of that “collected information” and combine them in a way that allows for predictive analytics. Then you can calculate the efficiency curve for the team. That allows you to accurately estimate 3 / 6 / 9 / 12 months out as to what to expect. This includes status, scope, financials and potential benefits. This is the cool part of PM. But the first few years it is boring

I’d add- it can seem like drudgery. Because it is. But if you’re looking for impact, most operations challenges are really found at that PMO level. Most of the time our clients don’t need the fancy new gizmo - they have much simpler problems and challenges that a well oiled PMO can help uncover. The trick and challenge is that a lot of strategy work is built off data generated by PMO. People like strategy because of the sexy vision and image that these groups swoop in and deliver a brand new idea out of nowhere. But the reality is that you use that drudgery time to learn more about the client, identify weak spots, and identify areas ripe for innovation. It’s almost never a quick strategy project alone that leads you to the new idea or innovation. As others have said - you do have to be in the trenches at some point. Your career is a learning experience and it can be a shock after college to realize you’re now just entry level. But it’s certainly an opportunity for you to learn - and it’s ok for you to have an experience and realize it’s not for you and that you need something else

Stay away from it.

It is miserable and soul-sucking. Unless they pay is really, really good, it’s not worth it.

You need to do it enough to make it feel easy and routine. Later when running 5/6 projects at a time, you need that intuition of where problems are likely to arise to be efficient and avoid problems.that intuition only comes from prior experience
