JK Rowling is a queen who understands the sexism biological women face. If women aren't allowed to define womanhood, then "women's issues" can't exist. (See the common insult TERF used to silence women). But also trans rights have progressed differently in the UK then US. In the UK, self-identification is all that's needed to access women's spaces (rather than proof of transition by hormones or surgery). Sorry but I don't want biological males winning women's scholarships, participating in women's sports, being counted as women in crime statistics, or fulfilling a quota meant for biological females who couldn't choose not to face sex discriminaton their entire life. I also don't want women to be in private spaces with males who are 95% of people who commit sex crimes, are peeping toms, install spycams, and sexually harass. Male violence is a real thing and changing your external appearance does not change that fact. Women in third world countries are still fighting for their right to female only private spaces for safety, and here we are trying to take it away

You express what I was thinking perfectly!

I question what she is fundamentally hoping to accomplish and if this is the best way to pursue those goals (regardless of what her personal opinions may be). I understand where she is coming from, but I think she would do more to advance her perspective if she tried to engage with the trans community. She positions the argument as an either-or, the rights and welfare of trans people vs. the rights and welfare of biological women, and makes a lot of generalizations that don’t advance the dialogue on either side. These are also very complex ideas that cannot be neatly captured in 120 or 240 characters, and social media isn’t the best place for her to start a thoughtful dialogue around nuanced ideas. I would expect someone in her position to use their status and influence to find a better channel for these debates rather than add to the twitter noise.

Looks like she posted an “essay” on her website which dives into the issues but still lacks a lot of substance in my opinion.

I will probably get reported if I express my thoughts here. All I have to say is the world has gone nuts.

I think it’s a reflection of her generation - unfortunately a generation that has trouble expanding its views and being inclusive.

I resent this comment. I am of JK’s generation, and have proactively taught my kids about every inch of the queer spectrum since they were toddlers.

Trans women are women. That’s it.

I am refering to Jenner's explanation of womanhood. I doubt most women on this forum would agree that figuring out what to wear is the hardest part of being female.

Just read through it. I agree with some of the points she made but I think it’s off base to try to say making it easier for trans people to change their legal gender is putting women and girls at risk. Trans people already are at so much higher risk for violence so I don’t think it can really compare. Also weird how she laments about women transitioning to men and then having fertility issues, but she’s seemingly outraged by men identifying as women without taking hormones or going through surgery. I say just live and let live.

It's not just theoretical either, this has happened in multiple instances. Trans gender people deserve equal access to housing, healthcare, and employment. I just take issue when it infringes on women's rights (and especially women's safety) https://news.wttw.com/2020/02/19/lawsuit-female-prisoner-says-she-was-raped-transgender-inmate
The eating disorder trauma my brother has gone through in order to stop his period is nothing to be taken lightly. Personally, watching a loved one go in and out of facilities is not to be taken lightly or jokenly. Just because someone menstruates does not mean that is who they were meant to be.
I really appreciate her view point. All I’m gonna say is that as a woman- I don’t like the concept of shared gender neural restrooms. I like my privacy and it makes me uncomfortable if I have to use a restroom that is designed for both men and women to use at the same time so trans people feel comfortable. Because what it’s doing is taking away my rights as a woman to tell comfortable .
All the stats I’ve read say that trans women (esp. of colour) are the most at-risk group from male violence. So I’d rather have them in the ladies room.

Personally, I think we’ve all shifted toward a point where we look for and somehow find fault with anyone and anything - almost as if we sit behind these screens living “perfectly” (whatever that is) and take on the role of a supreme being and judge everyone around is. In part, because we are judging ourselves and our egos are soothed by convincing ourselves of our own superiority. Lots of hate, anger, fear, negativity and self loathing. How many people would turn down an opportunity to have lunch with her? AND, would all the haters say the same thing to her face? Or, would you focus on the whole person in front of you? The good, positive and interesting aspects of her humanness?

I’d say the same thing 😊 she can write amazing books but also can be terrible for putting trans women down

It’s a super interesting philosophical question too. If men can just decide to be women, can white people just decide to be black? Transgender people should absolutely be treated with respect, get the rights they deserve, etc. But I think there are an awful lot of implications to gender being so fluid and something to just “be decided.” It’s intriguing as hell the degree to which the younger actors then eviscerated her for it.
