There's no excuse not to at least contribute to the firm match. It's free money. People tend to also forget company match doesn't go towards your max contribution IRS limit (there is a separate limit for this, but it's much higher and not likely most of us here hit that mark). So you could be putting away over the $18k a year if you can afford it. I'm at about 12% (10% Roth/2%trad)

like

Cool. Also something to think about is whether you're investing all the contributions immediately. It might be better to spread them out over the year (contribute as cash however often you want and then manually invest equally each month) so that you benefit from price averaging. Prices are high right now so it's possible you might be locking yourself into a high price that may (hopefully not) decrease later. It might be good to keep a reserve for when you notice prices decrease. Then again my suggestion is moot if prices keep increasing the rest of the year. I guess nobody can really time anything :)

^^ 40% seems impossible given IRS limits

6...I can't afford more right now. I'm also saving money on the side; just money I'll need before retirement!

Yeah I figure that if I get them in at the beginning of the year every year then over my lifetime it should average out as giving me half a year of extra growth. That assumes that it grows. Although I do agree with you that the market seems high nowadays...

Be curious to see what is salary vs how much people put in. 108k and putting in 9% but getting the match of 6% from company

17% 401k and 5% Roth. Salary of 80k

6 for match. Also threw 1k into a Roth last year so closer to 7.5%

I love how people say they will work forever. Your mind and body won't agree at some point.

It's almost always by year. EY does that so that if you leave they don't make any contributions for you.

^Time in the market always beats timing the market. Lump sum or spread out doesn't really make a material difference in the long run.

I’ve been with my firm for 10 years but in the last year I’ve had lots of recruiting interest. I’m coming back from maternity leave in a few weeks but I’m wondering how to tell my current company I need more money and a better position (that I can get elsewhere) without threatening to quit. I don’t necessarily want to leave my company but if others are offering more what’s my incentive to stay?
