No matter what level, I value people who are curious, have shown they can problem solve, understand that there are always more than one road to get to a goal and you need to always look for those additional routes as backups in case your first plan falls apart. A great producer needs to wear many hats and should never stop learning knowing that, show those qualities and you should be valuable to a production team.
It really depends on the agency.
We have a smaller production dept and desperately in need of an associate producer but we’ll need someone who can attend/cover edit or audio sessions, produce radio or smaller projects. We would need someone with some agency experience to hit the ground running.
Bigger department might be more open to hiring someone and teaching them the ropes.
Which agency?
I’d recommend an internship with a production company. You’d be amazed at the experience people will offer when they aren’t paying. And agencies love a little prodco experience. There are TONS of them and they’re small and hungry for help. Start there. That’s how I did it 20 years ago.
72andSunny is hiring interns, if they’re interested in an internship
Most of production is diving in and figuring it out as you go with help from an EP. That being said - I worked as an intern at a smaller shop for about 4 months - saw the process from start to finish and was able to leverage that to get an entry level job at a larger agency. I don't think I would have gotten my job without that experience.
