In my experience more pain than benefit is created by discussing compensation with your peers. If you’re happy with your work life and comp, and you find out a peer is paid more, then you are all of a sudden unhappy doing the same work. If you find out you are the highly paid lucky one and you share that with your peer, then you’ve made a friend unhappy.

There are easy ways to test your comp relative to market by entertaining the periodic headhunter call and asking about comp. I get it that I’m probably old school. However I’ve found there is more to happiness than being the highest paid consultant. That being said I’ve certainly given up some pay over the years.

You articulated what I didn’t feel like writing. Spot on

This is 100% true. Idk why there’s such a stigma against sharing salaries. Not doing so literally only helps the employer pay you less. Sure it might be a bit embarrassing to find out your getting paid less, but even on here, anonymous messaging, people are afraid to share salaries. This does not help you. Share your salaries with everyone you can. You don’t need a union for fair pay, just a bit of courage to potentially find out your getting paid less than your colleagues

There is no doubt about it. I easily disclose my pay. People paid lower somehow feel shame in admitting it and people paid higher don’t disclose to avoid envy. Regardless, there is 0 benefit in keeping your pay private. I say, like government salaries, corporate salaries should be openly searchable (at least within the same company).

Always share salary. Power to the employees, not employers

likesmart

I always share mine when people ask but never ask them to share theirs first.

Other considerations....background, years experience, performance, etc. There was a whole debate about this a few weeks ago that not all people performing in a role are performing at the same level. I’d be absolutely pissed if someone not performing at my level or higher was getting the same as me. Double edged sword here

like

Oh please, there are plenty of managers that have no idea what their people are doing. Just look around FB at the ways people brag about the stuff they get away with at work. Who sees that? Peers. Not managers. So yeah, if I’m at work watching a peer goof off and then demanding the same amount of pay as me and I’m working my tail off, I’m going to take issue with it.

Love you all and everything, but if you’re a high performer and are good at negotiating, don’t you want other people to be low-balling their comp? Also complete pay transparency may just incentivize firms to pay us all the same to avoid causing problems, which has obvious issues

Everyone in Accenture Strat makes the same at level, high performers make more through accelerated promo...I like this approach

I think it only benefits people who are underpaid. I don’t see how this helps people at the high end

I’d second this. I’m an experienced hire and it seems home grown folks doing the same thing are easily 10-15k under me. I think I’m worth my pay and have well rounded consulting and industry experience but the bands seem so wide

In some states it’s illegal to even discourage discussion of salary

like

Correct, my point was that some states go further than federal law by dropping any purpose language.

Here’s the state additions:

It’s a personal decision, not a one size fits all. I personally won’t share mine unless I trust the other person not to use it against me or others. Anonymized data like Glassdoor is good enough for a justification of how my pay compares to others’.

But it isn’t. It doesn’t account for different variables. Only titles.

Always talk About money. Anyone who says it’s rude, don’t talk to them about money. We can’t level the playing field if we don’t know. Also, don’t ask for money when you know you don’t provide the value. Gotta be able to back up your request.

No kidding!! It is also illegal for an employer to forbid or punish employees wo discuss terms of employment.

Helps level the playing field if salaries are standardized in cohorts. Also decent research starting to show that even when standardized, discrepancies being creep up in bonuses and that's where women and minorities start to get left behind.

PwC uses a cohort model in advisory now. Tax and Assurance still have salary bands

100% accurate. Asymmetric information benefits the employer. Endlessly frustrated when people are hesitant or afraid of discussing comp. You are feeding yourself into the meat-grinder, sheeple.

Asking for advice please. I’m making 57k as a Finance Coordinator (2 yrs). My work is a hybrid role: 1) Exec assistant for a C-Level exec, 2) Financial Analyst. I cannot become Analyst now due to an on-going visa application that is going to take about 1-1.5 years. I am very grateful that my company is willing to help me with my visa (around 10k) this year. But I am thinking about asking for 70-75k since living cost in LA is pretty high and sometimes my bank account can be negative. What to do?
