What do you all submit as writing samples? Can you submit a non-publicly filed document as a writing sample? Also obviously everything we do as associates is usually edited a bit, any issue with submitting a doc that’s been edited?

Filed docs (not under seal) can be filed as is without any permission. Non-filed you may need permission as the firm generally owns your work product. But if you remove all identifying information so the client can’t be identified, probably fine to use and if you get flack for it just say “oops, I didn’t know.”

Wassup guys! I’m a 19yr old college student that works in corporate Walmart, I’m one of the people in charge of the whole remodeling projects in the country, but I’m really interested in tech as I’m studying for computer information systems. I make good enough money and get a lot of perks but am trying to branch out. Any tips or referrals for any entry level positions?

When you're leaving your firm in a few months, but haven't yet given notice, how hard do you fight to keep your hours up? I'm not looking to coast, just wondering how worried I should be if I slip below 160 hours this month and if it's normal to slow down on hours when you know your departure is imminent.

What is the normal level of requests per day by a Senior Associate? I am working with a senior who expects me to do everything he is asked to do via email on deals, etc. I am doing so much for this one SA (as he also peppers me with messages all day) that it is making it difficult to do work for partners. I am looking to create some balance. No one else in my group on the SA level is like this in terms of constant requests. Any advice is appreciated.

Hey guys! I transfered to big law from a small firm where I had always worked with 1/2 Juniors who were working for me exclusively.

Now I share 7-8 juniors with a lot of people. I have problems with them taking work since they say they have too much on their plate, and thet dont produce quality deliveries in time (looks like they half ass it or dont invest time) (2/8 Juniors do fine)

I think they could push harder, but not sure how to handle the situation without a negative dinamic. Any tips?

If you don’t have 8 hours of billable time a day, do you leave as is or do you fill in the gap with non-billable work? While I am in the office, I don’t always get the billable amount since I don’t have enough work. Seems like a waste of time to enter non-billable time just to fill in the gap but I also don’t want them to think I am not there and slacking off.

For all those fully remote fishes out there, does your firm require you to be barred in the state of your residence, of the office to which you are aligned, or both? Specifically wondering how west coast offices are handling this.

I love the firm I work at but I should be promoted into a higher role. It was dangled when I took the job and I’m at the time period where they said it would happen (I took a pay cut as well and have performed a high level). How do I respectfully remind them that it’s time? Im wondering if I need an offer from someplace else in hand prior to discussing? My preference is to stay and get the $$$ and title that we’re promised.

This might be inappropriate but how often are the rest of you having sex with your significant other or spouse? We have little kids and I work 75 hours a week so I am lucky to hook up twice a week and even that is tough to schedule. My wife takes it personally if I am not all over her so I try to make an effort even when I am dead tired. But honestly lately I have been dreaming of a sexless marriage and anything else that will take some of the pressure off me.

Some partners are so stupid. In a free market system, if you want the good associate to work for you, you need to be a nice person. Otherwise, I have enough partners to feed me work and you’re the source of your own problem.
