Haha I like that
That’s true! Doesn’t mean consultants can’t still provide valuable advice and expertise that the client company doesn’t have internally.

Agree tbh
There are too many variables when delivering certain projects. For instance I did a few strategy pieces before with target operating models where parts of it worked and parts didn’t. Some of it is based on culture as well as internal selling, where we dont have much input or where they do not want to spend on us to get skin in the game.
The projects where we do have skin in the game are generally tech implementation where you may have liquidated damages for missing milestones.
He's right about skin in the game. That's mostly a function of compensation mechanics. Consultants that get paid on a gainshare basis instead of fixed fee do have skin in the game. That being said, consultants can and do still add value.

I’d say the consultants can add value but you need important people who have ‘skin in the game’ to get behind the change. You cannot fake it either. No amount of ‘extra caring’ will make someone with no investment as good a long term ally.
Converting people with ‘SITG’ is tough but once you do, they become essential. But it is such a classic rookie mistake to think that a bunch of irrelevant clients saying ‘sure, this sounds good’ counts when the person whose actual job will change is not convinced.

I feel like we do have skin in the game. If we don’t do a good job the client doesn’t hire us again and we don’t build strong relationships. With that said I’m usually on long term engagements so we stick around awhile and hope to keep selling.
think you're missing the point of the quote, but I see what you mean
I mean its true, its a jab but also you need to be realistic. If you're not tech or design centric you're probably not going to Apple anyway. Hard to disagree with Jobs..
