What do you consider to be the hardest and most intellectually challenging legal practice? I find insolvency to be the most technically challenging.

Tax is a tough learning curve but once you get it, you get it. I find patent lit to be challenging particularly when the patents and super technical.

I think it matters the level of practice in the specific practice area. To me, most practice areas that are practiced in major firms are hard and intellectually challenging since most clients don’t pay outside counsel to answer simple and easy questions (save for those times we all experience when a client just wants a CYA answer so if it goes wrong they can say you told them it was ok).

Construction. It can be highly technical both legally and factually and you spend a lot of time explaining the law to other attorneys who aren’t as experienced.

Some types of utilities law. Involves electrical engineering and highly technical cybersecurity issues. Deal with very smart, very technically capable subject matter experts everyday. Practitioners aren't common.

How often do you think project staffing decisions are made based off of internal company politics as opposed to putting people with the most relevant skill sets on projects?

I honestly don’t think I’m hardworking / ambitious enough for this. The 12 hour days are too much for me, and when I go outside and see all these people living life while I’m building a stupid model..

Have a Q on the Mega Backdoor Roth: I contributed 10% of after tax pay to a normal 401k and called Fidelity to rollover the after tax amount to Roth IRA. The issue though is that the after tax amount gets invested in my 401k investment election. So by the time I called Fidelity to process the rollover, there was a $12 gain on after tax amount. Fidelity transferred the original after tax amount to my Roth and transferred $12 gain to traditional IRA Is that correct? Any tax implications to this?
