What do you do if you feel like you've been made a department head for optics rather than for your skill? I'm a new director of our DEI department, which is really just 4 others and me. I'm almost positive I got the job because I was one of 2 non-white senior managers.

Take it and be sooo good at your job that they can't work without you around. And if it bothers you too much, then take the job and find a new place to work at...🤷‍♀️

Most organizations I've worked with have hired me after having hired & fired 2 people who where given the position, and I was lastly brought on board as a diversity hire. It used to bug at first, but now I see it more as an opportunity, esp. since my organization has a track record for promoting incompetent people who do not fall under the diversity/minority spectrum.

Yes. Just because someone is part of the emerging majority does not mean they have the skills to do this work. Kudos to you if you do have the skills and desire to do this tough work!

Tokenism is at play every day. And YES be so good at your job they are constantly amazed by you.

I’m looking for a new role in DEI if you want to step back to your old role.

I hate my boss with a burning passion. He is condescending, arrogant, and demeaning. I made the decision this week that I will no longer work with him and am taking active steps to transfer within my department so that I no longer have to work with him. I feel so relieved knowing that I have a plan in place. I am also proud of myself for not allowing myself to be abused by him.

Any suggestions on good medium-long term investments right now or in the near future? Can contribute approximately $50k now. Already maxed retirement accounts for the year, and I contribute $5k monthly to a robo account diversified between stocks, bonds and commodities. Have some student loan debt that is under 3% so I prefer to pay that off slowly if I’m earning more elsewhere

Hi all,

My boss makes jokes about me being from a different country whenever there is a work meeting or a gathering with coworkers, even though he knows where I am from. This usually occurs when I meet new work-related people or for example if I am in a situation that involves ethnic related subjects.

What is this? This is normal?

Stereotyping?
Racism?

The first time I ignored that, but now it has become a pattern and is bothering me now. I am south-American working in the UK.

In honor of National Voter Registration Day, The New Yorker released the transcript of a previously unpublished interview with James Baldwin, who gave a first-hand account of "Freedom Day 1963," a Black voter-registration drive in Selma, Alabama. I'm in desperate need of tips to get genuine buy in from our predominantly white, male senior leadership to create a more inclusive environment. As is often the case, middle management and below is very diverse and then at Director+ it gets much more homogeneous. So far any real initiatives get shot down in favor of performative actions to post on SM. Is this just how it is, or can we try something different?
