Run. Your growth, advancement, sanity all hinge on a good boss/employee relationship. I had that struggle at one shop. I tried to outlast and swap teams and prove my worth to everyone else on my teams... but in the end a bad boss resulted in a bad time. For my current gig, I shopped for bosses not shops. Couldn’t be happier.
Talk objectively with someone who doesn't have anything to do with the industry. Is it possible that you're misinterpreting what's going on? You may be right, but there may be something to learn here. Are you clearly understanding what his expectations are, or are you using the same words to mean different things and therefore getting it "wrong?" Depending on your role and relationship you may be able to ask him for some guidance and coaching to help you deliver what he wants.
Easy, don’t fail! Keep moving it along and prove your value.
Just get out. Your intuition is probably correct. Get yourself in a better situation. Nothing worse than an insecure man
I've asked for guidance and requsted his help to get better clarity. I said I'd even annotate every conversation, it's gotten nowhere. He has flat out said that he feels I'm gunning for his job (which is absurd in so many ways). Every project I'm on with him has been derailed or dramatically uncomfortable. He never wants to brainstorm or work with me aside from review and criticism.
For further context, I like the work I'm doing. I just get in these extremely political scenarios where it seems like he feels I'm undermining his authority, when I'm really trying to follow the directions given.
Document everything so if anything does happen you have your evidence that you have been trying to correct the situation, also reach out to people like your HR person, someone about your boss etc.
It has taken an interesting turn! The principal approached me today and asked about my bosses negativity. He told me I was doing a great job and to not get sucked into negative thinking. Did not expect this.
