What do you do when you get your dream job that you’ve worked so hard for for years, and… it turns out it may not be your dream😢 Can anyone out there relate?

I’m not sure if it’s just me, but all I know is the level of anxiety I feel about work can’t be right. Maybe I should give myself time to adjust?

I can totally relate… Teaching was my passion… it was a job/profession that I had dreamt about for years… I have a new dream job now… I left teaching. You can always get a new dream… but you only have one life…

I am surprised to see that there are so many teachers right now who were not happy with their jobs. I can't blame them. Teachers are underappreciated and underpaid.

I can relate very well, this is my 30th year. I’ve worked under 14 principals and 9 superintendents. One day at a time 😇

MES1 I’m right there with you! I am praying that this is my LAST school year!

I know how you feel very much. It's been good the first few years, but I've slowly starting to realize that I am not as fulfilled as I should be. Teaching has always been my dream job, however, the fact that we are being underpaid is getting to me. It's so hard working like this for so little.

like

Trust me, you are not alone. Teaching is not as easy as it looks. It takes years of mastery and lots of passion. You'll get better just give yourself time

I hear ya! I’ve spent my last 5 years at the top of what is considered best high school academically and athletics and feel the same way.

Yes I can relate. THat is how I ended up teaching. Sometimes the dream just isn't the dream when you arrive there. And thats okay. I say go do something you love.

This has been my fear. Teaching is hard and it's all I have ever wanted ever since. 5 years into teaching, I feel like I am slowly falling out of love with this profession.

I've always lived by "take your lemons and make lemonade."
When it's bad I need to grow. When it's too good I still need to grow. When I'm growing and my students are growing everything is lemonade.

I relate to this so much. I almost quit the first year I became a teacher. It wasn't anything that I expected it would be.

Aww that's such a bummer. How long have you been there and why do you think it's not for you? There's still a good chance that it may just be the admin or district that you're having a problem with. If you still think it's not for you after adjusting or changing schools, then don't force it. It haooens to the best of us. It's never too late to chase what you actually want.

Yup. Turned out my dream job as a teacher is far from a dream. I love teaching but it has sadly become one of my nightmares. It was with this job that I developed anxiety. It makes me feel so downhearted. To answer your question, yes you should definitely give yourself time to adjust.

Hmmm…..I got into teaching for practical reasons and I wasn’t motivated by money (obviously). I studied Political Science at UCLA with no end in mind - literally. However I did minor in philosophy which was more useful than my major. It prompted me to examine life, my life, what was important, what wasn’t. I subbed for a few years and travelled a lot. 6 months in Europe, 7 months around the US, 6 months in South America then left for a trip around the world. 9 years later I came home. I did a yacht race around the world after that, came home, got my masters (PPS credentials) and started teaching. I always loved the education environment (questioning, trying to make sense of your life). I didn’t have a passion for my subjects (government and Econ), but had lots of time for my students. Yes, I taught what was required, but quickly fell into coaching (football, softball, tennis). The kids didn’t really want to be in class, but they wanted to play their sport. And being single most of my teaching career, I volunteered for every supervising and chaperoning opportunity. I always admired teachers who had a passion for their subject, however you can inspire students in other ways - your interests, experiences. I’ve had one good principal and lots of bad ones. The district and state administrators seemed to be out of touch with reality and were more of a problem than help. I never begrudged going to work (it wasn’t “work” for the most part). If you are unhappy with every aspect of teaching, get out. Otherwise pick and choose what is rewarding about education.
You only go around once in life - make the most of it! Good luck!

I just recently resigned my teaching position for a position in another state to be closer to family. I will be making a lot less money (about 1/2 as much). Am I crazy to give up a high paying teaching position that took me 12 years to get to on the pay scale or is being closer to my family worth the pay cut?
