What do you do when you legitimately have run out of PTO because you’re sick a lot? I take prescribed medication that weakens my immune system but don’t want to explain that if I can avoid it.

I fully agree with those who suggest saying something true and vague about immune deficiency based on medical concerns (more eloquent scripts above), which lets you both declare that you're not flaky and maintain your deserved privacy. I am sorry you're going through this, OP -- hope it gets better in time.

I stand by what I said before, find a disease that matches your symptoms and will not subject you to professional judgement. Then take the time you need under the FMLA. Be smart about making sure you are ok first.

like

You both? Who else is here? I definitely feel like people want you to take care of yourself, but when you have an unusually weak immune system the PTO accrues at a rapid rate. If you can’t be upfront about why it’s happening, people tend to see you as flakey and I’m see that will begin to become an issue for me. The bigger problem for me right now though is: what the heck do I do without any PTO When I’m sick or want to take vacation?

like

Say you have a medical condition that you have to deal with. People aren't going to inquire further. That said, I'm not sure what you're looking for here. I don't think you'll get more PTO, just the right to unpaid leave. Or are you talking about explaining your frequent absences to teams?

like

If taking this medication is a long term thing, then the solutions are a lot different than short term disability. I believe that you can go to talent and your leadership and say something along the lines of "My immune system has recently weakened greatly due to new medical concerns in my life. I am concerned about how much PTO I may need to take because of this. Do you have any suggestions or ways to help?" Also Deloitte Talent is there to help you and cannot tell your leadership your actual medical condition. I know this is something that is difficult to come out with but even if you tell talent, you do not need to tell anyone else.

like

I really, really don’t want to level with talent or whatever about the cause of my immune deficiency. I don’t have HIV/AIDS but my condition has a similar stigma. I feel like I’m letting project teams down because I randomly get sick for a day or two and I’m almost sure I’ll have to cancel my plans to see family over the holidays as a result. It just sucks

Take care of yourself, do what is right for you to be healthy and happy.

Fuck it, I’ll just apply the context here: I’m a recovering opiate addict. It started with medications for chronic pain caused by a birth defect and eventually manifested into me creating my own opium analog using amazon-stocked products. Because my raw materials were legal, I never had issues traveling for work or became dependent on a dealer or suffered financially (relative to the extent the black market drugs world would have me suffer). I was physically dependent for years and my work didn’t suffer at all, but it did get to a point in my personal life where it became clear I needed to reconsider my choices if I wanted to have a good life. The medication I take helps my brain and body cope with years of opiate dependency but also weakens my immune system substantially. Anyway, that’s obviously not something you want to advertise in our line of work so I can’t be open about it.

like

It will be interesting to see how my context changes the way people respond to this post. Obviously most people think they are not judgmental but I think opiate addiction is difficult to conceptualize for those who haven’t been through it. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.

My point being: if it's short-term you can lie/deal with it (it being no vacation). If it's longer-term, you have to find an equally long-term solution. You can't never take a vacation

like

Take STD and not FMLA. Also - see if you can get on a local engagement. Will allow you to flex with your work. Try to get on internal firm initiatives rather than client engagements. This will keep you employed while giving you room to recover. But you won't get more PTO.

like

OP, my leadership has been awesome with me over the past few months just dealing with the side effects of Chantix (recovering nicotine fiend). Go to talent for sure, but you might be amazed how supportive people are when it comes to this kind of thing. I'd have your back for sure

like

OP you can also look into reduced work schedule, especially if this is going to be a long term treatment. I knew a practitioner that only worked Tues/Weds/Thurs due to medical issues. Only worked remote and local projects though, and of course it does affect your comp

Ditto D2. Your SLL and SA leadership have a lot of discretion in your metrics and exemptions to PTO usage. I had something come up that was not medical but was essentially told I could take unlimited leave (non PTO impacting) to deal with it and still got a 1 that year. Explain to them what you're going through (taking medication that results in compromised immune system) and they can help guide you through who and how to handle with HR and your project leadership. Recovery is a long road. Not suggesting you share everything but asking for help navigating will help you be more likely to succeed in the long run.

And maybe if you don't want to get into details, you can get a doctor's note that's relatively vague but that notes whatever limitations you're facing, and request ""reasonable"" accommodations related to your specific case

You both work at Deloitte, I have never worked for a company that applaudes taking care of yourself more.

Hi all, I realize this isn’t a medical community but would still appreciate insights. I started Trintillix for anxiety / depression but ultimately insurance wouldn’t cover it.
