What do you do when you’re an associate at a big law firm and you lose your motivation? How do you get it back?

Before I get over my crush I wanna punch him in the face because I didn’t go out of my way to find him, he found me and caused the pain that’s been hard to get over. It was not my fault 😞 stuck between losing a friend, telling him how I feel or ignore him forever.

I was just asked to relocate to a different city. The move will come with a raise and promotion, but I'm conflicted. I enjoy where I live right now and I like being close to my family. Would love some advice.

Partnership deal - is this a good deal?
I’m working on building a start-up. This requires an app and a website. A friend of mine has a web development company who can do the job for me very well and efficiently. He really likes my project and offered a partnership: i pay him $30k and he gets 20% equity.
He also gave me the option to be ‘treated as a client’ and deliver my project at a normal rate (about $80K), should I not want to partner.

Since leaving the federal govt & joining consulting last year, I’ve already learned new skills + met some great people. I’ve also seen a few who are competitive to the point of toxicity. Just like the feds who’ve perfected laziness & stagnation...I feel sorry for them both. With the feds, they may not realize it, but they are rotting in place. For the hyper competitive consultants, nothing will ever be enough. For both, by the time they realize their error, it will be way too late.

Are signing bonuses still a thing? For a 7th yr M&A associate in major market / top firm? Not wedded to my current firm and scored a six figure signing bonus a year ago. Wouldn’t be opposed to another large pay day (and ramp down / ramp up hours) now that I’ve passed the claw back period.

For you psychos in great shape, what are some benefits other than looking good that you can share to keep me motivated? I’ve started working with a trainer but I’m tempted to cancel every session because I have “too much work”. I’m also constantly sore and tired now.

Has anyone taken some time off without another job lined up? 1.5 years in and not sure if I even want to stay in law anymore, would quitting make it that that much harder to come back? Id want some time to really figure out what to do next, so I’d rather not lateral and ramp up at another law firm immediately.

Wondering about potential exit/in-house opportunities for different practice groups. I’m currently in big law and choosing between general corporate deal work (M&A/PE) and tech transactions. Do either of these give better in-house (or other) opportunities later on?

Is it a red flag if during an interview the partner asks how your billable hours were last year? Could be just a standard question but I wasn’t sure.. I’ve never been asked that before in interviews.

I am a rising second year associate and just got a call from our client who questioned why a due diligence request list we prepared was so long. I stumbled my way through a meek explanation that the requested items were important from a legal perspective, but the client did not appear pleased with my response.
