I guess it depends on the age. When I taught first grade I would react differently than I do now that I teach sixth grade. Regardless documentation and very clear conversations support and communication with parents. That way if it continues and there are no improvements with those supports you have the ability to show that this child’s behavior is not improving and that there needs to be something more done outside of the classroom.
This was supposed to be to the topic, not directed at you! lol
Well I teach prek but I have a space in my room that if a child is disruptive or screams or carriers on they go into that space. In that space I have a sensory table with acrap paper. If they are really frustrated they can take it out on the paper. Also our school counselor gave us playdough, stress balls, a pin wheel for deep breathing techniques. I guess if the child gets really out of control you would ask administration to step in. Hope this helps.
I always ask is it defiance or disrespect? Cause if its disrespect find a way to build 1 on 1 time with this student doing something they enjoy (ie play uno, lunch with the teacher). if it is defiance I would look into an individualized behavior chart. I would pull him/ her into the hallway and have a disciplined conversation. I would send them to the office or work with your school social worker. Does anyone else have any other tips on how to manage defiance?
We have a “calm down corner” in our room, chock full of mindful texts, yoga pictures, sensory items and mandalas to color. First line of defense is taking said child on a very important walk to the office or ANYWHERE for ANYTHING (I’ve sent a kid to get a paper clip before!) and if the walk doesn’t calm them, right to the calm down corner. That being said, I do have an assistant to help. If you don’t, I’d talk to the staff and see if you can have the school psychologist or guidance councilor come help support. Good luck!
