I'm a recruiter who has also been heavily recruited via LinkedIn and I just see it as setting expectations, which I appreciate (and I have given similar responses as well when other recs reach out). I could see as a hiring manager how that could come across as a negative if that's not the primary world you live in, but when you're getting 15+ requests per week for high demand roles for example it becomes a necessity.

like

Not rude and not a red flag to work with. The only red flag I can imagine is that it may relay how interested they actually are in the position – candidates who are genuinely excited would probably put in a bit more time to sound nice. The question to you is – is this a position that would sell itself or do you need to do some candidate schmoozing to get who you need? If the latter – take it easy with the replies and sell what you got :)

Short replies are not rude, they actually save everybody's time. We are bombarded by messages on LinkedIn, it's a way to cut the BS. Entitled replies are "I think my profile is too good for this"

like

I have personally responded this way on LinkedIn. I wouldn’t read too much into it. I think it’s a very quick and direct way to align on whether or not to move forward.

like

yeah, would you rather someone writes a long flowery letter about why can't pursue the role? If they're responding in a way you don't like, I don't see the point of dwelling on it, you just move on

Ugh this is hard for me. I manage a team of 5 and am also hiring. Part of me wants to call people out for this but I genuinely think some people are short in emails or messages because they think it looks more professional. I truly think many people don’t mean to offend. Now, I do think there are people who communicate like this and are doing some sort of power maneuver. But, there isn’t a good way to gauge that from email. So I would brush this off (even though this is a huge turnoff for me too) and wait for the interview before judging.

@engineer2 the ellipsis ... my favourite written shorthand for conversational English. Don't get me started on Oxford commas though...

I wouldn't worry about the brevity of a message or email unless they say something negative. It means they are still putting the work they are currently doing first in their time management, which is good. It means they won't spend several months at the new organization doing nothing but applying to other jobs when they decide it is time to go.

like

I guess it just felt a little not humble but I totally see your point. Thanks

Seriously? There's like 800 recruitiers that reach out to one candidate over the course of week and 90% of them don't respond. There's no reason for them to not be cold on the first impression

I reply to an insane amount of messages per day. I’m usually very brief. I don’t consider it rude. The tone you read an email in is often entirely in your own head. Brevity does not equal rudeness nor do pleasantries imply kindness.

Can you really tell someone’s “tone” over email, text, LinkedIn message? Lol

That’s true

OK, so, keep in mind that it could be a cultural thing. For example, New Yorkers, Londoners might come across as rude but are just to the point. Might that be it?

Thank you so much. Yes . I accidentally posted it here. My apologies. I appreciate your advice.

Can you provide an example response? I feel like email etiquette is much lower lately, with the rise of Slack and other messaging apps, along with texting.

I think you're correct that expecting a thank you isn't much to ask. I'm personally very warm and respectful to anybody who reaches out on LinkedIn, etc, but I have to admit it gets really frustrating when recruiters reach out, we express interest, then they ghost us. Equally as frustrating is when somebody in our industry asks to connect and upon connecting they immediately try to sell us a product or service. I think you're more or less receiving backlash, even in a passive aggressive way, based on how talent have been treated for years.

100%. If they can't be polite in the first interactions, imagine how they will be on the long run.

Candidates get a lot of spam and lowball recruiter messages on LinkedIn. I almost always ask salary info beforehand. Those candidates aren’t rude, they just are business oriented and don’t want to waste your time or theirs

like

It's a flag - maybe not a red one. How strapped are you for candidates? If you need to get folks in the door to interview, ignore the email tone. If you've got more candidates than you need, consider email tone to be the criterion for your first cut.

like

Consider the email or message your first ‘signal’ on a candidates professionalism and true interest in the role. Then validate with something that allows you to get a sense for a candidates true behavior - like requesting a video message answering a question or a 15 min call. Or look for candidates in niche slack/upstream communities where you can get more signals on their behaviors and personality.

Good candidates are getting bombarded via LI and similar recruiter messages, especially this time of year. Also, a ton of people will likely be using the LI Quick Reply feature, which could probably come off as curt. I know in my LI messaging, I don't use the same formalities as I would in email with someone I know/have worked with. They probably don't want to waste your time or theirs, maybe not take it so personally?

What's wrong with ending with thanks?

Nothing wrong either way.
