What do you do with small business funds that are sitting in cash, but aren't operating funds.

Context: my wife has a small business with 45k in the bank. I get that she needs reserves to pay her employees for several months in case her customers don't pay on time (which happens), but I think the number should be like 20k and she thinks it should be 30k. And she doesn't pay attention as the profits accumulate (she doesn't take a regular salary until I remind her to take lump sums of $5k).

I’d leave her alone. Your wife knows what she’s doing. No need to mansplain. ☺️

It's amazing how judgy people get. My wife asked my opinion and I was looking for options.

It's really not worth worrying about 15-25k being eaten away by inflation when a small business is almost certainly better off just having the liquidity. Wouldn't worry about it.

like

You could put it into a high yield savings/MMA. Some are getting >2.5% rn and completely liquid. Might even get a deposit bonus as well

like

Nothing.

Thanks for your input.

Wife and I aren't arguing at all, but trying to help her be successful.

You want a long runway with the current market uncertainty but once you've calculated what that is I'd, personally, be focused on growth. If she believes 30k is right, the next question is how could she funnel 10k of that to improving operations or marketing or w.e.

Not that it's your business haha; let her keep crushing it.

Do people tend to age out of wanting to FIRE?

In your 20s-30s, you don’t know much, you’re told what to do, you have few financial resources so you are tied to your job. Under these circumstances it makes perfect sense why you would want to FIRE asap.

But eventually you advance up the ladder, you are now the boss and your people do all the grunt work. You also have built up expertise which makes the job easier. And you are making the best money of your life. FIRE is no longer so pressing.

I have a lot of student debt from law school. I’ve refinanced a couple of times and received the best fixed rate available, but I’ve seen others refinance with a variable rate which of course is lower. I’ve read some other comments of people refinancing at a super low variable rate....isn’t this risky? Of course I am afraid of going variable and then the interest rates going up a lot. Am I missing something?

Serious question - is there a reverse FIRE strategy? I like the idea of saving and retiring early, but the one hiccup I see (and sorry if this is grim) is if you die earlier than expected. I’d be worried that I would minimize lifestyle and fun for retirement at 50 but I’d die at 49. How about a way to work 9 months out of the year and retire/travel/relax for 3 months? This way you guaranteed your dreams/etc. are fulfilled

Where can I start learning about retirement in America? I’m naive on the topic and originally from another country so I need reliable learning resources. I’m 31 and don’t have anything yet, except 6months in emergency fund and I started traditional 401k a few months ago, but can’t max it out currently as I make less than $70k right and single, so I’m currently putting 6% on a targeted retirement age portfolio.

Where do I begin figuring out the actual execution of retiring? e.g if net worth is > 4mm at age 35, how would one figure out what FIRE lifestyle would be now versus coasting with an income for a few more years? I realize this is a pretty dumb question.
