What do you do with your 401k when you leave a company? Do you roll it over to your new company’s 401k or convert it into something else?

If the 401k is Roth I would definitely roll it into an IRA. If traditional, it depends if you currently use or plan to need to use the backdoor Roth IRA in the future. If so you don’t want the funds in a traditional iRA. I would leave it where it is or roll to the new 401k.

Roll in into an IRA

If you roll it into an Ira you usually get more control how the money is invested.

Thanks everyone. Just occurred to me now would be the worst time to transfer given the drop in the market…

Why?

like

FWIW, I have lost a few $K everytime I didn't leave my 401k with my former company. Each time the position would close when the market lost a 2%-3% and by the time it reached my other institution, the market had made up the previous week's loss.

Hi all. I am licensed in life, accident and health and am looking for new opportunities. I’ve been working in employee benefits in a small brokerage firm on a book of business of over 400 clients, I’m the only account manager. We’ve had 100% employer retention since I’ve been here. I am a high performer, but not sure I’m valued much at all . I want to reach the top and become partner in my career ; this is why I went to work for a small firm. My boss favors others when I do the most work!!

I’m seeing lots of posts about really bad losses. If you trade you’re going to lose money - hopefully not all the time, but many positions will be mistakes. But you need a process to find ideas and manage positions. Two books you should read are “The New Trading for a Livinng” and “The Laws of Trading.” Both look at psychology, process, and risk in different ways that can help you work out your own process. The next 18 months will be much harder than the last 18 - time to start learning.
