What do you feel is a reasonable hourly rate for recent graduates going solo? Absolute low and high caps? Relying on local market data sets fees and expectations too high IMHO.

Not sure where you practice, but $150/hr seems awfully low. We bill our paralegal at $180.00. But this is CA.

Is there a good resource that anyone recommends to confirm median hourly rates for attorneys by county or city?

Charge the going rate for the area because that’s what you’re worth. Here’s what I mean... 1) I’ve regretted every one of the rates I charged when I was first starting out. They are still owed the same duty of competency and they are still going to stiff you on fees, even if they’re low. 2) You went to law school just like those other people. Sure, they’ve spent time in their field, they’ve worked hard on their reputations. To a certain degree, that counts for something. But mostly, so what?! That means you charge a little less, not hundreds less. 3) I’m not mentioning him by name but if he reads, I hope he forgives me... I had a man seek out my advice. He’s scared to jump into full time law because the other attorneys see his bar number and know he’s newer than they are, and he’s worried about how he’ll look. We’ve all been there and it’s scary. But you don’t make yourself look more competent by cutting fees and providing legal services cheaper than anyone else. You do it by providing quality work. 4) I’m licensed in a lot of states. One of them has a county with less than 3000 people. The judge is literally there one afternoon a month because he’s a visiting judge from another county. Many other areas are massive metropolitan areas with millions of people in those cities, let alone counties. If I charge the same rate in that small county for a DUI as I do in the metropolis for a trademark, that makes no earthly sense. Which brings me to my next point... 5) what kind of law influences the rate. A Chapter 7 bankruptcy should be anywhere from $500-$1250 flat fee. A patent should start at $10000 if you’re doing a favor for a friend and go up according to the complexity. All of this is to say there’s great reasons why the local market rates are what they are.

I don’t care what market he works in- $150 is too low, especially for soft IP. $100 or $50 is insulting and I want to virtually shake some common sense into him. Further, flat fees are great in soft IP because it’s often small businesses or individuals that need something. That flat fee helps them budget and also helps him know exactly how many cases he needs to land on per month. Simply put, let’s say he’s in the same market as me. I also practice soft IP. I’m not referring him any cases because he doesn’t value himself. He’s going to get way too many low value cases that expect the sun, moon, and stars on a budget and take up so much time. That’s going to cause him to get overwhelmed and drop the ball on them. And then I look like an idiot for referring anything to him. So he’s not even getting my cast-offs!

NY small firm here: $250 —> $450 depending on a number of factors including: Distance, Relationship with client (prior/new), Judge/Court, level of annoying client projected to be after initial meeting and a few other things...

I’m glad our feedback was helpful to you. Good Luck with your practice.

Question for you all: Left D to Company A for a 50% raise in TC and slated to start in <1 week. However, just got an offer at Company B for a 100% raise in TC compared to D, or 30% raise in TC compared to company A. Both firms do similar work but B provides a more solid comp package. Job duties would be relatively similar. Is the % jump worth burning the bridge? Would have chosen Company B if the offer came sooner but the % difference in A to B is at my [personal] 30% threshold. TIA!

I’m 36, earn 100k and I work maybe 30 hours a week, and I’m a shining star. It allows me to enjoy life without stress. I can linger around and see myself (slowly) climbing the ladder. But part of me wants to put in hard work and grow a lot in my career and earn more for a stable financial future, but it means I’ve got to work more and stress more and I’m worried I won’t get time to relax and enjoy my life as before. But also I’m worried I’ll slack off. Anyone going through this? Would I regret?

INSEAD vs LBS: Targeting MBBs post MBA. Profile: Nationality - Indian, Current Location - London, Experience: ~6.5 years across Deloitte and EY. Currently on track for Manager promotion at Deloitte next year. My main concern is around sponsorship, are MBBs looking to hire non-Europeans esp. @INSEAD? People say it is a consulting school but majority of campus hires are EU / British citizens. Not sure if Brexit has changed something recently.
