PwC OP^ I've been working on strategies for a few years now. For me, it has more to do with being an opportunist than being overly meticulous. You need to be able to scan across industries and find possible stocks and options that are sensitive to price fluctuations. E.g. This Jan and Feb I traded options on MLPs (ETP, KMI) because the options were underpriced to relative to the swings in oil prices. The energy transfer partnerships option prices were not calibrated to the large swings that were taking place in the oil market. In short, sometimes finding a stock that tracks a commodity can be a strategy if the commodity is volatile but the stocks option pricing doesn't take this into account.

What about option trading? I know in school I could score a few extra grand a semester. Haven't tried it here but there is enough down time where one could day and swing trade while at work. Especially if you are working from home. I'm not talking about trading on audit clients, I'm a tax guy.

@ PwC 3 I think Option strategies would be interesting, especially when played around earnings. I'm still in progress to study options. Where do you go for resources to learn trading? Learning to be successful is tough, as you could burn through thousands before you become consistently profitable. Do you day/swing trade the mid cap firms? I'm always worried about holding overnight just in case of huge gap-downs, which happen even to blue chip firms like Office Depot!
