I'm mixed on this. On one hand, there are serious issues with standardized tests. On the other, in the absence of some objective measure, college admissions may end up with incredibly biased admissions decisions with no way to prove anything one way or another.

like

Hopefully it’ll steer young kids to not go to the scam that is college. Or at least evaluate better options to where to go to school. Killing your future with debt for a piece of paper learning things you can find at the library is one of modern day’s crimes.

If there’s no way to objectively measure candidates (yeah yeah yeah I know the ACTs/SATs have their flaws), have fun having admissions lotteries decide whether you go to Harvard or community college lol

Capability is normally distributed across all people. Capability is correlated with success on standardized tests, but is not the only explanatory variable. Things like tutors, prep classes, extra help, quality of instruction in formative years, or what I’ll more broadly call “access to resources”, also explain some of the variation in how students perform on the tests.

There is an equal proportion of capable students in traditionally underrepresented groups where the standardized test serves as a barrier to entry due to unequal access to resources. Removing this barrier to entry allows for greater access to our institutions which can help close the gap between historical disadvantages. However, there is still a gap in output between historically disadvantaged groups with less access to resources, so universities will have to do more upon arrival to “catch them up”. However once a baseline is established, the output would in theory be equivalent.

As others have stated, it does also open up the possibility for more subjective evaluation methods, which to my knowledge have not yet been measured where we can determine if it’s a statistically significant amount of bias into the selection process.

I think it’s fine to eliminate barriers to entry, especially if they have an adverse impact on underrepresented groups. That said, I neither advocate for, nor decry the method they’ve chosen to utilize in lieu of the standardized tests.

Yale announced they are going to study the success of the class that (I think) entered in 2021 (and possibly 2022), comparing the cohorts that were admitted without standardized tests vs those that did submit them. I think that is going to be very interesting. There is so much disparity between the quality of schools that I think comparing students based only on their grades is not likely to identify the best candidates.

For example, my son is a junior at an incredibly competitive public high school. He is ranked somewhere around 70th in his high school class despite almost flawless grades in challenging classes, but he is not in the top ten percent because of how competitive it is. (This screws him with the algorithms that weed out kids not in the top ten percentile.) His lifelong friend, however, goes to a different high school that is not rigorous at all, has not taken very challenging classes, and is ranked thirtieth in his class (top 5%).

So what differentiates them? They both come from privileged backgrounds, they both have had any academic support they need, they both play sports at a high level, etc., etc. The difference between them is that my son got a 34 on the ACT, and his friend is praying for a 28 after taking a class. This difference is because, intrinsically, my son is smarter, more intellectually-oriented, and a much more dedicated student. But how do you know that without SOME kind of measure?

(Btw, I love his friend. He is a sweet, funny, very kind kid. But at my son’s high school, he would be somewhere around the top 40% in the class.)

I'm in the last stage of the screening process for an Amazon AWS security engineer position. Due to the recent hiring freeze, I was given two options: - go through the last screening (5x1 hour interviews) and, if accepted, wait for a position to open. If not accepted I have to wait 1 to 2 years to apply again, as usual. - OR don't go through the screening and having to go through another screening process. Advices on what to do are welcome. Right now I'm more prone to go through the interview.
