On average, I usually do a three way split between 33% save (cash), 33% invest and 33% spend each month. In bull market conditions I’ll put more towards cash and in bear markets, I’ll put more towards investing
Not counting 401k? Like 3%, I put a couple hundred each month into a savings account, and every 6 months I tend to take a couple grand and dump it into stocks.
I do max my IRA so I personally consider that an investment as well.
0%. Once i funded a smallish cash account (10k), everything since has been invested.
Appreciate the candor!
I spend about 30%, invest 5-10% (max out Roth IRA contributions each year) and the rest I save. I'm saving up to pay for grad school, planning on going MBA full time in the near future
Maxed out 401K to take advantage of company match, and aggressively saved to have 100K cash on hand in case of emergency. Hit that milestone in 2018 and now I’m pumping most of what used to go to the rainy day fund into index funds. Including 401K, about 50% of my partner and my income doesn’t ever touch our checking account. Straight into investments now.
Thought about it, but we scored such a low interest rate in 2016 that we are better off sticking to the monthly payment and putting as much as possible into index funds with a higher rate of return. We also live in an area with modest property values, so owning a house is more about stability and being able to paint the walls whatever color I want than it is about making a big investment.
Save meaning fluid cash, not counting 401k.
