Hi. Any idea about the salary at Chanel ?
I’ve had success with, “I’m sure you have a budget approved for this role. What’s the range that you have approval for?”
When they ask
I ahead revert to I’m actually curious to hear first from you on the range
Or you can say from my research I found this role pays x to x and I want to be in that same range
The best way to say it is, “I am currently interviewing for positions that pay $120,000.” Do your research. Look in the states that require transparent salaries & where cost of living is similar to where you live, look at what those positions pay, then say that line ^. That way YOU aren’t creating the expectation, you are simply declaring what other companies are willing to pay you.
How about the approach of asking what is the range of approved salary for this postion?
It's just a pre-negotiation smoke screen objection. Blow right through it, smoke out the ZOPA (with research and questions), determine your bargaining power, and go for the jugular.
Ask high so that you can negotiate down if need be
There is so much available information on roles and average salaries. Be armed with data. Answers like ". My research states that the average salary for similar roles in similar market cap companies is $x? Myself having more/less experience in this role would expect to be (a certain percentage) higher or lower than that..... Are we in the same game?". If you are having a hard time finding the data for your state or city, gather it for a comparable cost center or any other state then ratio cost to earnings. " What's your range?" Type answers shows you are willing to be pushed around. Personally I have been told, "your research is substantially higher than what we start new employees " I have taken a couple of those roles with short term promises of raises, performance pay, promotion, etc.... be prepared and be confident in asking for what you believe you are worth, unless you don't know your worth.... And remember, your last salary doesn't necessarily dictate the value you bring. I have both been over and under paid at times in my career.
