I think it really depends on how often you have 1:1 meetings. I have weekly 30 minute meetings that are primarily for project review, questions, planning, etc.
Once a month we’ll extend a meeting to an hour and talk through some broader things. Check in on my goals, see if I want to explore other projects, or just talk about what I’m missing in my job and what would make me happier.
I’m thankful to have had good managers the past 4 years who are willing to make time for these. My first job out of college was almost entirely focused on meeting billing goals, and it was frustrating.
My usual go-to if I don’t have a ton to talk about is “do you have any feedback on recent projects for me?” or “is there anything I could’ve done differently in X meeting?” I’d specifically ask about a presentation, report, etc. It’s a more direct question and you’ll get more constructive criticism.
thanks, this is really helpful. I have weekly standing meetings with my manager but also bi-weekly meetings with my director and monthly meetings with my executive director. they always tell me I can set the agenda and drive the meeting but I'm generally pretty content so outside of immediate project updates I don't have much to tell them.
more feedback is always helpful and hopefully will start some better conversations.
