What do you think about a Masters in Information Systems? Useful in the tech consulting space, or useless?

It was a great idea in 1998. Not so much now.

It depends on what your background is. I’ve known people that did not have technical or even business degrees that wanted to break into consulting and the MS in MIS was a perfect way to get their foot in the door.

Honestly the certs prove nothing, everyone cheats on them by getting the question banks anyway. Client experience is way more valuable. MS is obviously valuable too, will teach you a different way of approaching problems than you normally would, hopefully. And networking

Can we switch OP? lol, I’m in enterprise application and dev work but looking to get in analytics!

What about MS in cyber or data science? Still not worth?

like

competitive DS are normally phds

It's useful if you know how to finesse it. Any contrarian attitude towards not getting one should be avoided. Leverage your skills with that credential and you will go far.

like

It is useless due to poor management. I am excited about kids with MIS degrees as they tend to do better than BS in Business

SaaS software certs seem to be way more valuable in my experience. Agile certs too. What are you looking to do specifically in tech consulting?

What is your expectation after you finish?

What about if you eventually want to teach? Would it be useful then?

An old friend once said those who can’t do teach. So I feel if you can’t get real world experience to backup your credentials then yes an MIS degrees would be needed. But you will learn more working for a few years than any top tier program will teach you

Nope, MS MIS graduate here. It may line you up for a ERP/SaaS consulting roles but unless you are passionate about it, I’d stay away from it coz it’s pretty darn crowded here

Useless, unless MS program has consulting specific courses /certifications (ex: SAS, BI, SAP, Data Analytics, Cyber Security etc)

I’m already in consulting, specifically analytics. Trying to break into more enterprise application or dev work

Nope. Unless you are using it to get a work visa in the US. 90% of students do MIS as a way to get jobs and work authorization in the country

@IBM1 lol let’s do it
@D2 I have noticed that a lot of grads are international. I was born in the US, so I’m good on that front

MS in cyber, maybe? In data science, prob not

Back story: I started at my firm 2L summer and was asked to stay on throughout the year. I know I proved myself to be reliable however, a year out of law school I own multiple areas of coverage and am solely responsible for them.

It's not that I'm not capable to own these unsupervised but I feel very junior to own multiple things single handedly do everything that I'm doing.

Please help. My husband works in construction and has been for 20+ years. He worked as a construction manager for a very small company last year where the owner was a terrible human being and completely tarnished his perception of that role though other companies would be bette. Physically working as the contractor daily basis wreaks havoc on his body; he’s 6’4” and 300 lbs. He says he’d rather be in physical pain than mental pain. Any ideas how to encourage him to try it again/another job?

Do you think it’s a good career move to accept the offer? By the way, the offer rate is €35 per hour (excluding OPEX) and the contract is for 1 year.
