What do you think is a better starting position in software development, at a fintech startup that can be fully remote or a college campus with a higher starting pay?

What exactly is the difference in salary? I personally like the tech and fintech space but don't have experience in academics. However, I feel like the experience and skills you will learn at a fintech startup may be more useful to propel you to higher paying roles in the future

It’s a difference of 14k, there is a chance of bonuses/incentive pay at the fintech position although nothing guaranteed. The commute is over an hour to the college campus so gas/tolls will eat into my salary.

I would go with the fintech startup, you have much more room for growth with other companies than going the academia route.

Academia can be volatile, especially with everything going on right now. I'd stick with the fintech startup if it were me.

I think I would go with the fintech startup, college campus may have a higher starting pay but like you said gas/tolls will eat into your salary and I haven't heard as great of things about working in the academic field.

Judging by what you've described, I would go for the fintech startup. If the college campus has a higher starting pay but a longer commute, you're not actually gaining much in the long run. I think you'll find fintech far more exciting

FinTech startup for quick growth in skills and then likely transitioning to more senior roles u less the startup continues to grow well.

Fintech startup for sure. But it depends on your goals, academia might be better if you're looking to be in that field long-term

Please don’t waste someone’s time asking for a referral if someone else already gave you one. Most companies won’t let you have more than one referral and all you do is eat up someone’s time that is willing to help you out. It’s happened more than a few times now; just be honest that you want to learn more about a company / role and I’ll be just as willing to help you.

I’m the only one of my close circle who didn’t head to suburbs after kids and WFH has made me aware of how reliant I was on work friends for a social outlet. I’ve still got great friends I can call for anything but, really missing having girlfriends I can just meet up without planning a month in advance. Strategies for making new friends in middle age and with very little spare time?
