What do you wear to interviews? I like wearing a full suit but I've interviewed at a few startups and felt over dressed. Have an interview at a major agency. Do you still rock a suit or another style?

Great question OP!

My style is usually “business-business.”

I wear a full three-piece suit but literally tear off the sleeves to show my tattoos. That way I can show I mean business, both artistically and professionally.

Seriously, is this your first job?

likefunny

@R/GA1 Yeah that's absurd. Should at least be 5-piece.

likefunny

Also I keep a slice of cheese in my pocket.

A three piece suit? Wtf are you people doing...why.

Fitted Dark denim jeans, white button down, blazer of choice. You’re golden

I wear jeans and a button-down with the sleeves rolled up so you can see my tattoos and a pair of dope-ass pair of Oxford boots.

I wouldnt work at any company that looked down upon a suited man. I interviewed at a digital agency and wore a crisp white shirt..all those sloppy hippies in flannel and manbuns judged me for that and i didnt take the job even when they offered. The whole reason no one takes an ad man seriously is because many dress like homeless hipsters

Dress up like fearless girl.

like

You can never overdress for an interview. Any place that frowns upon you wearing a suit to an interview isn’t somewhere you should work

like

Just ask the recruiter or hr contact before you interview and adjust accordingly.
There’s nothing worse than rocking up over dressed imhp.

like

Polished business casual and you're good to go.

like

Ok:
-obviously something nice, meaning decent fabric and construction
-clean, not wrinkled
-dress pants over jeans
-heels bc own your power and height gets a salary premium for men, so why not try your luck? Otherwise a basic flat or nice (clean) boot.
-show some of your personal style, but keep it tasteful/to a minimum. Not too much jewelry etc
-dress for the job and agency. Wearing a 3-piece suit may be seen as stiff or out of touch for a creative/agency role.
-something you feel confident and comfortable in
-obviously don’t wear something that specifically highlights your physical assets, unless that’s the kind of job you’re going for..
-not overly (read: offensively) perfumed

A suit is always appropriate. Seriously. And never wear a suit without a tie, or a suit jacket (not a blazer) with odd trousers or jeans.

likefunny

I usually ask the HR person or recruiter that's coordinating. I haven't seen anyone require a suit unless they are an industry that likes to "suit up" often (banks, consulting firms, political institutions).

Business casual is usually safe at agencies. i.e. any shirt with a collar, pants / chinos, dress shoes or nice boots. Modify those three variables in dressiness based on the level you're interviewing for and establishment at hand.

I'd say start ups, you never want a suit. Major agencies, maybe, but you probably don't need a tie.

I'm rambling...

like

Ha thanks everyone. I started off at talent agencies which are suit heavy and the 8 years after that I've been hired consistently through reputation and referrals. This is the first time in awhile I've had to interview and have had differing opinions from friends so thanks!

No one is really frowning on wearing a suit (aside for 1). Being properly dressed boosts the perception that you'd fit in well as an initial impression. I know that's shallow but an advantage is an advantage. Should you show up to a first date at a 1-2 monies restaurant in a suit? You can, but if you know that the waiters all wear rollerblades and tank tops, and your date is wearing Birkenstocks with sleeveless layered denim jackets, rest assured that more than one party in there is going think, "weirdo."

I say wear what you would wear to a client meeting.

Hi Googlers,
I had a question for you all. Do interviewers give their feedback and rating (or score) before your “package” being sent to HC? And if there is a bad or lower rating in one of your interview, does the “package” still get sent to HC knowing that it may not pass (60% possibility).

Anyone went through the Data Scientist interview process on Coinbase?

I left my job about a year ago to relocate, make sure it was the right decision and start a side business in the mean time. Now I’m actively looking for a new sales position, have tons of experience, but am struggling to even get a response from job apps. I am wondering if this is because of my employment gap? I don’t have my side business listed on my resume because I don’t feel like I have enough positive “stats” to report yet given it’s new. Any advice or recommendations?

Hi IBM sharks 🦈

So I got interviewed for a project by the IBM team. The interviewer told me that its a go ahead from their end, now the client will assess my profile and if they too are fine with it, I will be onboarded?

Is it true that we have client interview as well? If yes then after how many days of interview by IBM team, client interview takes place?

Or its just that if the IBM team is fine with it, we are selected for the project?

Any inputs on this will really help :)

Have you been fired before even starting your new job?

I signed for a new job two months ago and will start next month (3 mo notice period in Europe). They were very keen on getting me on-board ASAP before signing but since I signed the contract it has been silent from the new employee. I've emailed them with questions as I'll be re-locating to NL and it takes them 1-2 weeks to reply. Given all that's going on in the world, I'm worried they might fire me before I even start.
