The politics behind every thing. How so little is done with the students best interest in mind.
That paperwork, grading, and classroom management take up far more of your time than teaching does. I tell every college student who is studying to be a teacher to spend less time on content and concentrate on learning how to manage large groups of little people who are diverse in thought, culture, and levels of respect.
Above is the Holy grail of what you should know before becoming a teacher. I would've been either better prepared had someone told me those things.
That teaching is an act of service. Be prepared to combat all of the bull with your ultimate goal of service to your students and your fellow man.
That the system is working against you. It cares very little for the kids and more for keeping itself going intact. It will try to grind you, but stay focused on your cause.
That you have to be your own cheerleader. Don’t expect a thank you or any type of appreciation for the truly amazing and worthwhile work you do. No one is watching and no one cares...except the kids. They are who you are working for and believe it or not, you make a difference.
That the work is truly hard. It’s hard on your body, your mind, your very soul. And the weight of it is unbelievably heavy. Find mentors to teach you how to carry it the most effectively. And find friends that will bear the burden with you.
Home is home. Don’t bring all the above there. You deserve a place and a time to take respite from the mission. Do not defile that time and space with the work, unless it is to enrich your home in some way.
I would second the opinion from above. It is unfortunate that often times we see the adults getting in the way of great things kids are capable of.
That your degree is pretty much useless for any other job depending on your BA. I'd recommend that those thinking about going into teaching also think about what degree they could get that would allow them to also leave teaching if necessary. After 12 years and a BA in Psychology, I'm basically stuck in teaching unless I go back to get a MA or PhD, which isn't feasible since I can't just stop working for a few years. So, yeah, base your degree on what you might do if you left teaching.
I was just thinking the other day that I have 4 degrees and I don’t think any of them will allow me to easily leave education. I debate yearly with staying or leaving the profession.
Very little of your career will be spent actually teaching.
That is was not a career that could support a family and that the reform needed is overwhelming.
I should’ve been paying more attention to my pay stubs and credits and the pay scale and putting money away for retirement and stuff...that wasn’t explained to me and I’ve screwed myself out of A LOT of money 😕
That teaching isn’t teaching.
All of the time you have to spend on discipline...
That no profession takes as much abuse as this one! Between ungrateful parents and administrators who are on such a power high that they break rules left and right as they lie straight to your face, then tell you I never put anything in writing!!! (Hmmm.. might be why he’s facing embezzling charges now!!!!). For what you make and then spend on your students continuously you don’t make enough to support yourself !!!! I would discourage anyone from the profession today!!!!!!’
That my to do list would never be finished and that is ok.
I agree
This is so very true. I wish someone told me this... Thank you, I'm going to screenshot thus to remind me of why. I've stayed 5 years and will continue to stay longer if God says the the same.
How much time we are expected to put in before and after school and on weekends. It’s not “required” but we are expected to have paperwork and grades completed “on a timely schedule.” Which I agree with, but then pay us for the extra time we have to use to keep up. I always feel the pressure to get it all done.
This! That we “knew what we were signing up for”. Yes, a principal said that to me when I stated how much time the new expectations for lesson plans and grading were. I jumped for joy when they moved on. I do wish this was the profession I did begin 30 years ago. I loved it then. The “reformers” hadn’t gotten so much power; textbook corporations hadn’t forced the standardization of testing; teachers were still allowed to be creative and supported.
That a normal work week which includes teaching, leading extracurriculars, volunteering at school related events, grading papers, and lesson planning totals around 60 hours a week. Did I mention I’m also a first year teacher in grad school getting my masters? 🙃
