What does an in-house employment lawyer do? I’m in private practice but thinking about applying to an in-house job. Aside from dealing with terminations, what else do you do?

I’m not an employment lawyer but my colleagues deal with litigation matters for our company (about 20,000 employees). Discrimination claims, union
negotiations, wage claims, wrongful termination claims, etc.

I’m not an employment lawyer either. But, this is what my company’s employment lawyers do as well.

Every possible HR and employment related question can get run through in house employment counsel. In addition to what A1 mentioned, issues related to hiring (background checks), internal investigations related to employee actions or possible misconduct, policy review, leave questions. And supervising any outside counsel on work related to the above.

I'm an in-house employment attorney and what you do really depends on your company. I am at a closely held private software company. My three biggest tasks are handling all of immigration filings, contracts, and policy implementation. I actually have very little to do with terminations unless there is some underlying issue. Just a general termination typically doesn't reach the level of needing to involve legal. I am currently a one-woman army and handle all of our legal matters on my own unless we hire outside counsel. When we hire outside counsel for issues such as taxes, litigation, or security issues I am the main point of contact and act as a project manager.

Going from private practice to in-house has been the most amazing transition. Hours are better, stress is way less, and generally I work less for more money. Highly recommend making the move to in-house if you can. Happy to chat more if you have other questions!

Very cool. Do your colleagues who do in house employment seem happy? Or bored?

In addition to above, at some companies if you could be asked to handle policy implementation (ex implementing a vaccine mandate), anti-discrimination and similar training presentations, reviewing contract clauses with employment law related implications (personnel background checks, termination, etc). Some companies may have employment lawyers assist in managing employee visas or immigration related paperwork. You will also do a lot of proactive risk mitigation and counseling for your internal clients (coach managers on how to address certain situations that arise with their employees, review intra-office related communications, etc).

End up as a named person in a memo that gets leaked to a major news outlet, most likely.

Hi Fishes, I cleared technical and MCQ round at Accenture. And got a mail stating i have been selected for HR round. Later the same day a hr called and asked me to upload all documents and asked my expected CTC and stuff. Earlier in portal it was showing interviewing , now it shows review or pending and has a message ' we regret to inform that you experience does not align with req, we will contact if anything comes up' , what does this mean. How can they put something like this?
